You know how something can be a good episode of TV at the wrong time in the story? Showrunning is hard; it happens all the time. I think “Alex” was a good episode of Skins, dropped into the series at a very weird time. If you’re going to kill off a beloved character, you should probably examine the way it’s touching the lives of your already established characters. Right? I mean, introducing a new guy, no matter how interesting and gay he is, is kind of, well, bizarre. But that’s Skins. You think they’re gonna zig and they zag. Sometimes the zag is glorious thing. Sometimes it’s a baseball bat to the skull.
AFTERELLEN BAIT
Skins didn’t completely ignore our characters’ grief, though. Mini and Liv use it to beat the crap out of each other, and it does provide another great Mini quote. When Liv gets disgusted with the fake mourners at Grace’s memorial, she gives them something to actually remember:

You guys, I am so sad about Grace dying. I didn’t expect it to bum me out this much. Chris’ death made me cry, Freddie’s death made me roll my eyes, but Grace’s death is messing with all the wonderful memories I had of series five. I want to forget and just remember them the way they were, all Brave New World and everything. Speaking of Chris, when Alex nicked his grandma’s coffin, did it remind you guys of Sid and Tony doing the same for Chris? Gah, too many emotions.
Also, if you want to see the greatest grandson/grandma with dementia story ever told, you should watch Friday Night Lights. Alex’s nana seemed nice enough, but she’s no Grandma Saracen.

Obviously, “Liv’s always had top tits” took the (distraction) cake, but I also liked:
“Who the f–k are you anyway? We don’t know you. We don’t need you.”
“I’m not a f–king rent boy, and even if I was – 20 quid? Seriously?”
