Gay Girl’s Goggles: “The Secret Circle” SnapCap (1.07)

When only four percent of scripted TV shows feature LGBT characters, what’s a gay girl to do? Why, strap on your gay goggles and watch TV along with us, of course! Our handy appraisal scale is better than any old letter grade. Other sites A+. We say, “What about our lezzy-lady feelings?”

Despite all the evil, death and destruction in Chance Harbor the past few weeks, Grams decides to leave Cassie alone while she goes to Henry’s lake house to find him – mistake #1. She tells Cassie it’s OK to have people over for Halloween, mistake #2, and forgets to tell her to keep the doors locked, mistake #3. Three mistakes and you’re out, Jane. Like a light.

AFTERELLEN BAIT

OK, Faye and Cassie go into a spooky magic shop. Faye is fully clothed one minute, and the next, she’s strutting her stuff in this:

Chamberlake is so on. Let’s see that from another angle, shall we?

Granted, I haven’t been in a lot of magic shops, but the few I have visited do not have dressing rooms. Think about it.

FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS!

Oh, so many feelings! Diana and Adam, full of teenage longing but unable to be together because of destiny. The witch who owns the magic store, trembling in fear and yet risking his life to get word to Cassie that her father was full of dark magic. Melissa, still grieving for Nick, leaning over his grave in this sweater to help him have a happy afterlife. Nothing is malfunctioning about this wardrobe, thank you very much.

And! Halloween means that The Secret Circle becomes The Circle of Death – the witch hunters kidnap and put them within a circle of iron sulfite to stop their powers. The witches are evil and must be killed! By witches! Wait, what?

MOMENTS OF FAYE

Halloween might as well be called Day of the Faye. She loves it.

Cassie: “Halloween’s the night you pretend to be someone else, right?”

Faye: “Sluttier versions of someone else, but I get your point.”

Diana: “Faye, what is that?”

Faye: “Uh…zombie?!”

I have to give Faye credit, though, for recognizing that something is amiss with Jake. She’s an intuitive little b-witch.

THE FOREBODING

So, kids, what did we learn this week? First, Cassie actually is the strongest witch in the circle – because her father was an evil dude named John Blackwell. Apparently, his dark magic ways set off the events that ended up killing all the witches 16 years ago. Because of that, Cassie can’t be killed off with simple magic and she is powerful enough to counter it. She also is able to do magic on her own. That may be the scariest thing about this show.

Second, someone is after the Elders, too. When Jane finds Henry’s body, she snags a crystal out of a hiding place to bring him back. Only someone knocks her out and snags the magic rock before she can. Jane better be OK or I’m coming after you, Evil.

Third, we now know that the witches of Chance Harbor aren’t the only ones with long legacies – the witch hunters do, too. But the lines of good and evil are muddled, since the True Believers are willing to do anything to wipe out witchcraft. The comparisons to other misunderstood minorities are not exactly subtle – Cassie even says, “I don’t understand how anyone can hate us so much. We haven’t done anything wrong … we were born this way.” I hear ya’, girlfriend.
