Gay Girl’s Goggles: “Ringer” SnapCap (1.03)

When only four percent of scripted TV shows feature LGBT characters, what’s a gay girl to do? Why, strap on your gay goggles and watch TV along with us, of course! Our handy appraisal scale is better than any old letter grade. Other sites A+. We say, “What about our lezzy-lady feelings?”

Look, any show that ends an episode with Portishead’s “Glory Box” is a show I plan to watch another episode of, at the very least. But even without the luxurious ear porn, I think Ringer is starting to find its sea legs. No, luckily not back out on the big, fake sea from the pilot; but the mystery is starting to feel really mysterious and the emotions are starting to feel really emotional. And Sarah Michelle Gellar, well that gal is all done getting warmed up. She’s starting to swing for the fences.

AFTERELLEN BAIT (What enticement did the episode use to reel in gay lady viewers?)

We get a glimpse of Jaime Murray as Olivia (for the HG lovers). A glimpse of Tara Summers as Gemma (for the ginger lovers.) And then we get a whole eyeful of SMG in this little number. I think the only appropriate response here is a low sustained whistle.

FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS! (Did the episode give you a lot of feelings?)

Remember how I was complaining about the lack of emotional investment? Well, I kind of think they listened. This week instead of focusing on how to get rid of inconvenient dead bodies, it was about trust and subterfuge and really pretty dresses. SMG got to be more than confused and perplexed, she got to be smart, resourceful and — yes — emotional. When those baby greens well up, I have a positively Pavlovian response in my own tear ducts. Or perhaps that’s just the Portishead talking.

TWISTY TURNY (Exactly how confused are you this episode?)

Her husband is good! Her husband is bad! Her husband is good again! Siobhan is bad! Siobhan is sad! Siobhan is calling the baby dad. Speaking of calling, a cellphone seems to be the biggest mystery going so far as its mystery caller really, really wants it back from Real Bridget/Fake Siobhan. But instead, RB/FS is using it as her Get Out of Killed by a Hitman Free card. Clever girl.

DOUBLE VISION (How clear is the show’s vision, double or otherwise this week?)

By choosing to show us more of the inner workings of Siobhan’s marriage, we’re getting more of a feel for who she is — and who Bridget is turning Siobhan into. It’s nice and finally that emotional investment I was hoping for. We actually want Siobhan’s husband to be a good guy, and we want Bridget to patch up their marriage. Sure, it’s still weird thinking that she may end up sleeping with her sister’s husband. Speaking of her sister, the “Oh crap, I’m pregnant call” from Real Siobhan to the baby daddy made me feel sorry for her for the first time. More like this, Ringer, more like this.

So, is the show finding its groove? Have you grown attached to Bridget or Siobhan? And, really, why don’t more TV shows use Portishead?
