Billie Piper to play a teacher who falls for a female student

Confession: I once owned a cassingle of Billie Piper’s “Because We Want to.” It was my jam!

These days, Billie is known more for her acting skills than her brand of British ’90s pop. She’s wowed Doctor Who fans and shown a lot of, uh, range on Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Now she’s joined the cast of a new BBC One drama, Love Life, where she’ll be playing “a teacher who is disappointed with her relationship with a married man. She ends up becoming attracted to one of her female pupils.”

Now we’re all aware of the “teacher/student” trope (especially when it comes to lesbian relationships), but hopefully it’ll be more like Ezra and Aria Pretty Little Liars than the predatory Eva Green situation in Cracks. Who wouldn’t fall for Billie? Plus, I don’t think we’ve seen two females in this scenario on television, only in films like Loving Annabelle.

Love Life will follow “five overlapping stories examining love,” and other stars include David Tennant Vicky McClure, Ashley Walters, Jane Horrocks and David Morrisey. It will be written by Dominic Savage but also “partially improvised.”

Digital Spy quotes BBC’s controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson:

This is a complete first in TV drama on BBC One – a serial made through improvisation. It features some of our very best acting talent working in a way we’ve never seen on screen from them before, using improvisation to push the boundaries of each story, to get right to the heart of the truth.

Boundary pushing? Billie Piper? You don’t say.

In fact, the actress has kissed women on screen many times before, on Call Girl and in the film Things to Do Before You’re 30.

Will you be watching Love Life?
