“Glee” Music Highlights: “New York”

Last night New Directions were in New York to compete at Nationals. And it felt like a disappointing showing.

First up, Brittany (Heather Morris – or possibly a voice-over singer) performs a catchy yet insipid original tune, “My Cup.”

Next, New Directions hits the streets for a mash-up of Madonna‘s “I Love New York” and the classic Frank Sinatra/Gene Kelly song “New York, New York, It’s a Wonderful Town.” Madonna probably won’t mind, but something tells me Frank would not be happy with the result.

Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) slips away to perform “Still Got Tonight,” a single off Morrison’s solo album.

Artie (Kevin McHale) and the rest of the Glee guys serenade Finn and Rachel with “Bella Notte” from Lady and the Tramp.

Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) perform a beautiful duet of “For Good” from Wicked.

We get a clip of an unidentified girl’s show choir performing Usher‘s “Yeah.” (Wish we’d seen more of it.)

Sunshine Corazon (Charice) does “As Long as You’re There.”

New Directions finally takes the stage for two original numbers.

The first a ballad, “Pretending.”

Then “Light it up Tonight.”

So, thoughts on last night’s performances? I loved a few (Kurt and and Rachel’s Wicked duet, the final uptempo original number), but on the whole I didn’t think they made good use of the NYC backdrop.
