The first-year police drama wasn’t picked up for a second season by Fox, and joins a slew of the network’s on-the-bubble shows that got axed last night. Also canceled are Lie to Me, Human Target, Breaking In and Traffic Light.
The Chicago Code has received critical praise but middling ratings. Series creator Shawn Ryan tweeted that Fox will air the season’s remaining two episodes as planned, which will air the next two Mondays. But the cancellation still leaves its stars, including Beals, without a steady gig for now.
It also marks the continuation of the so-called The L Word curse, which has doomed all cast member’s first post-TLW new series to cancellation. For reference please see Sarah Shahi (Life, canceled in its second season), Kate Moennig (Three Rivers, canceled in its first season), Rose Rollins (Chase, canceled in its first season), Janina Gavankar (The Gates, canceled in its first season), Erin Daniels (Swingtown, canceled in its first season) and Jane Lynch (Party Down, canceled in its second season — though she left after its first season to join a little show called Glee).
Heck, poor Leisha Hailey has her post-TLW project squashed before it even saw the air. Though, I kind of feel like we dodged a bullet on that one. I mean, Leisha would have been great I am sure, but I have no interest in Ilene Chaiken‘s vision of The Farm life.
Of course, all this talk of curses is still. There are clearly no such things. Wait, was that a black cat? Most new shows fail (witness the bloodletting at Fox yesterday). And even so, that does not mean all their future projects will be failures. Jane is doing quite well for herself in her track suits at McKinley High School. Sarah’s new series Fairly Legal just got picked up for a second season.
So, are you miffed about Fox canceling The Chicago Code and therefore Jennifer Beals? What would you like to see her do next? And how about that TLW curse?
