Sara Rue to play lesbian surrogate mom on “Rules of Engagement”

While at TCA this year, CBS president Nina Tassler promised we’d see more gays and lesbian characters on the network, including a lesbian softball player on Rules of Engagement. Up until now, we knew very little about the character, including when she’d actually show up as the new season began a few weeks ago.

Sara Rue has now been cast as the role of the lesbian, Brenda, who will be the surrogate mother for Jeff and Audrey (Patrick Warburton and Megyn Price). The role is recurring, which means Rue will appear several times this season.

Rue’s most recent gig has been as a Jenny Craig spokeswoman, having lost 50 pounds on the diet/exercise plan. She has had roles on Popular, Less Than Perfect, Will & Grace, The Big Bang Theory and Eastwick.

She’s certainly an interesting choice, but in the past has proven to have some great comedic timing and character acting skills. Let’s hope the writing is good! No word yet on the air date for Rue’s first episode, but we’ll keep you posted.
