A lesson from Effie

I haven’t seen One Night Only on BET yet, but I might tune in Tuesday night, because Jennifer Hudson will guest star. The series is a “reality docu-soap that follows a group of eight high school kids and their drama teacher in New Orleans as they race to mount the Dreamgirls musical.” Hudson stops by to offer a student some advice. You can watch a sneak peek on BroadwayWorld.com.

The whole premise sorta reminds me of Slings and Arrows, of which I now consider myself a fan. This rich, engaging Canadian drama chronicles the adventures of a theater company facing financial hardship and a round-the-bend director — and rising above it all because Shakespeare is worth the effort. You can catch it on the Sundance channel at various times this week (new episodes on Sundays).

Theater on TV. Who’d have thought? I’m so there.
