“Glee” gets a second season and seeks new Gleeks

Glee is coming back for a second season and you could be on it. That’s right, Fox announced yesterday that it renewed the freshman hit for its sophomore year. The early vote of confidence also came with news of a nationwide casting call for three new roles next season. That’s right, you could be an official Gleek.

That the show, which has been a breakout hit and pop culture phenomenon since it debut in May, was picked back up is no surprise. But fans will probably be most excited about the audition news. Much like how it found its current cast, the producers are auditioning unknowns, newcomers and professionals to find new talent.

The nationwide casting call beings in February to fill three new roles. Auditions are open to amateurs and professional between the ages of 16 and 26. All hopefuls can submit their auditions online. Check www.fox.com/glee soon for full details and updates.

The official press releases goes on to say that the “unique casting search and process” will be chronicled in a multi-part special that will air leading up to the premiere of the series’ second season in fall 2010. Then the new cast members will debut in the premiere episode.

In announcing the news, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly called the show “a true and rare gem in television.” And things are just going to get gemmier (go with it) when the show comes back April 13 to complete the second half of its first season. Among the guest stars will be Tony-winning Broadway star and Lea Michele-doppelganger Idina Menzel and Olivia Newton-John. The latter will apparently sing a duet with Jane Lynch‘s Sue Sylvester to — wait for it — “Physical.”

So, does the renewal news fill you with you know what? Or are you primping already for your audition tape? What are you singing, by the way?
