Meet the new family on the TV block

There’s a new drama premiering tonight on ABC Family called Lincoln Heights, about a Southern California policeman who shocks his suburban family by deciding they should move into a former crack house in the inner-city neighborhood where he grew up.

Exec produced by one of the women who worked on Soul Food (which I enjoyed), this series is surprising for a few reasons: it’s a cable TV show about a black family that isn’t a comedy; the parents are still together; and it actually explores class issues within the African American community. All in all, not your average TV viewing – which is probably why it’s on cable and not network TV, but hey, baby steps, right?

Of course, after I’ve gotten my hopes up, I’ll probably end up hating the show, or it will be homophobic. But I didn’t think I’d like My Boys, and look how well that turned out.
