Adolescent males hijack the People’s Choice Awards

Nominees for the 33rd Annual People’s Choice Awards (airing January 9th) have been announced, and although several of the categories are women-specific, like FAVORITE FUNNY LADY (Ellen DeGeneres, Julia Louis Drefus, and Queen Latifah) and FAVORITE FEMALE MOVIE STARS (Jennifer Aniston, Halle Barry, Sandra Bullock), the nominees in the movie category read like the top results in a Maxim reader poll.

According to the official press release, the nominees in each category were selected by a “pop culture-involved sample of men and women ages 18-49”. But one look at the list of film nominees and it’s obvious they mostly polled teenage boys or grown men who think like them men whose idea of being “pop-culture involved” is playing Grand Theft Auto and watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy in an endless loop. (Okay, my girlfriend loves LOTR, and I’ve been known to get sucked into playing the occasional video game marathon, but you get the idea.)

Sure, some of the movies/shows on the list are entertaining, but in what universe are Cars and Failure to Launch anyone’s favorite movie of 2006?

In the FAVORITE MOVIE COMEDY category, the top nominees are Click, Failure to Launch, and Talladega Nights – a movie about a man who controls his wife with a remote control, a movie about a man who is lazy and lives with his parents, and a movie about a man who races cars for a living. Clearly the members of the People’s Choice Academy or whatever they’re called don’t even know any women between the ages of 18-49 if they think these films would top the 2006 movies list of even two out of 10 women.

For FAVORITE MOVIE DRAMA, we have The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Okay, I liked all three of these movies in their own way, but as the favorite drama of 2006? No way. I didn’t expect An Inconvenient Truth to make the list, but what about The Devil Wears Prada? Little Children? Casino Royale, even?

Finally, the finalists for FAVORITE MOVIE overall for 2006 are Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and X-Men the Last Stand. To quote Arrested Development‘s G.O.B. Bluth, “C’mon!” Come to think of it, I bet G.O.B. was one of the people they polled for these nominationsÀ?óâÔÇÜ?¼?ª

The television nominees are a little more balanced. FAVORITE TV DRAMA includes CSI, Grey’s Anatomy, and House; and the choices for FAVORITE NEW TV DRAMA are Brothers and Sisters, Heroes, and Ugly Betty. These are the only categories with nominees that make any sense, so these must be the ones that actually polled women. Ditto the nominees for FAVORITE NEW TV COMEDY which include 30 Rock, The Class, and ‘Til Death. (Although how did ‘Til Death get on the list?)

I do have to give them props for tapping Queen Latifah to serve as this year’s host, and including Ellen DeGeneres as FAVORITE TALK SHOW HOST (up against Oprah and Jay), and Pink’s “Stupid Girls” in the FAVORITE POP SONG category. Although it is a little ironic that a song about girls not pimping themselves out is up against songs called “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Promiscuous”…

What would make your nomination list for favorite movies of 2006, if you ran the People’s Choice Awards?
