There are standards, and then there’s Nicole Richie

The FCC is still hemming and hawing about indecency, particularly “fleeting” foul language on news, awards, and reality shows. A couple of years ago, the Bush-ified agency decided that the f-word in any context “inherently has a sexual connotation.” They’re still applying that standard to some instances, including the 2003 Billboard Awards show in which Nicole Richie said: “Have you ever tried to get cow s— out of a Prada purse? It’s not so f—— simple.”

Come on, FCC: This is an easy one. All you have to do is say that use of the f-word by anyone with a brain is fine (unless explicitly sexual), and the use of any word by Nicole Richie is punishable by 10 years’ hard labor. I think even Trent Lott would agree with me on this one. (How is that guy still a senator??)
