The 79th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres on Sunday, February 25th, provided us with a rare opportunity to see of a handful of Hollywood's highest-profile lesbians all glammed up, in the same place, at the same time.
It was a very lesbian Oscars this year: not only was the year's biggest award show hosted by an out lesbian, but Melissa Etheridge took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and Jodie Foster was a presenter. (Dame Judi Dench was also nominated for her role as a predatory lesbian in Notes on a Scandal, but lost to Helen Mirren for The Queen.)
Mainstream entertainment websites are busy compiling galleries of the hundreds of celebrities who walked the red carpet as we speak. To help you cut through the clutter, we've put together a short photo album of the out women at the Oscars (or in the case of Jodie Foster, a lesbian icon). Enjoy!
First and foremost, the night belonged to host Ellen DeGeneres, in a red velvet suit and white shoes.
"If there weren't blacks, Jews or gays, there would be no Oscars," Ellen joked at the beginning of the ceremony. She later changed into a white pants suit and showed off her Oscar holder (pictured above).
