Most queer women have been Clea DuVall fans since the ’90s when she showed up in teen movies like She’s All That and Can’t Hardly Wait as well as TV faves Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ryan Murphy‘s Popular. In just 20 years time, she’s appeared in at least 25 television shows, 40 movies and a handful of shorts that her appearance alone makes worth watching. (Luckily she chooses some great projects.)
Here are just 10 of the roles Clea’s inhabited in projects we could watch again and again. Or, alternate title, 10 Times We Crushed Hard on Clea DuVall.
The Faculty (1998)
Although Stokely wasn’t a lesbian, everyone thought she was and she used their fear to her advantage. Clea was always a convincing goth.
Sleeping Beauties (1999)
Before But I’m a Cheerleader, Jamie Babbit cast Clea in her Sapphic short, Sleeping Beauties, which follows a lesbian mom queering Sleeping Beauty in a bedtime story for her young daughter. High Art‘s Radha Mitchell is also in the short, which Outfest has available on YouTube.
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Clea was perfectly creepy and yet somehow endearing as Georgina Tuskin, a pathological liar who was part of the best squad ever: Angelina Jolie, Winona Rider, Jillian Armenante, Brittany Murphy and Elisabeth Moss.
Graham may have lost her trust fund for being a homosexual, but she won the heart of Natasha Lyonne for the first time in this classic dark comedy. This was also when she became the root for lots of questioning young women—specifically in that black button-down shirt. You know the one.
Sofie is a tarot reader in a traveling circus who has a lot of mommy issues. When a girl tells her she reminds her of “Katherine Hepburn” (a come on if we’ve ever heard one!), Sofie has a vision that includes them getting it on, but not necessarily in a good way. Still, Sofie is the star of this show, and full of magic.
American Horror Story: Asylum (2012-2013)
Wendy was a smaller role for Clea, but her ill-fated romance with Sarah Paulson‘s final girl Lana Winters was one of the reasons Asylum remains one of our favorite Horror Story seasons.
The part of Dana is small but important in this short film as Clea is the encouraging best friend to a genderqueer widow (Mel Shimkovitz) who is pregnant with the baby of her late partner.
Addicted to Fresno (2015)
Blink and you’ll miss her but Clea as Regina, a sex shop worker in Fresno, California was a pretty perfect cameo and an abundance of purple dildos.
Marjorie Palmiotti works for Selina Meyers and then starts to date her daughter, Catherine. She’s stoic but suave and has swagger for days in a suit.
The Intervention (2016)
When Clea writes herself a role, it’s as Jessie, a hot rich lesbian with Natasha Lyonne as her girlfriend (yay!). Then she brings in Alia Shawkat as a younger woman who can’t keep her hands off of her. There’s more to the story, of course, but these details matter.
