“Supergirl” is getting gayer in Season 2

When Supergirl returns to a new network this fall, it’s also bringing a few new characters from the DC canon, and one addition, in particular, has us pretty psyched.

“Maggie Sawyer is an amazing character from the DC Universe who is a bad ass, who is a gay character, who we’re bringing in who is so cool,” said out Executive Producer Ali Adler during TCA. “The actress, Floriana Lima, is amazing. We’re so excited to get started with her and it’s just gonna be an amazing addition to our cast.”

Fans of The Family will recognize Floriana as the lesbian lifestyle blogger, Bridey, from the short-lived ABC series. While she doesn’t have the same short blonde ‘do that Kate Kane’s lady love is known for, she will hopefully carry some of the same characteristics as the hard-working police officer from series like Superman, Metropolis SCU, Gotham Central, 52, Detective Comics and, of course, Batwoman.

“What’s important for us in Supergirl is that all women in the show are really strong,” added Executive Producer Sarah Schechter. “I mean it’s important on all of our shows and I think you see that in al the shows-in Arrow and Flash and Legends-but Supergirl, it’s like, if you have a great villain, it elevates your hero. If you have a strong woman, you want to surround her with other strong women and so Maggie’s sort of suspicious. She’s grounded; she’s [sort of not] a superheroshe’s a regular real life hero.”

Although Ali and Sarah wouldn’t share if Maggie will get a romantic interest, they do give us some hope that we’ll see more than her crime-fighting.

“I think what’s cool about this season is we have an opportunity here to explore more of people’s personal lives,” Ali said. “The last year was about seeking their professional success; she became an amazing superhero, she became a hero at work and go ta promotion and now everyone across the board’s lives are being explored behind the scenes of their professional life. It’s a really cool way to start the season.”

During the DC shows panel at TCA, it was revealed that one of the characters in the DC universe would be “exploring their sexuality” and “coming out.”

“It is a significant character,” said Supergirl Executive Producer Greg Berlanti. “And I think the important the only reason we’re not we’re not trying to be coy about it. The only reason we wouldn’t is just we really want the audience to enjoy the character development, you know, and not necessarily being ahead of the storyline.”

No word on who this character could be just yet, but it’s possible it could be an existing Supergirl character that might just be exploring herself with Maggie Sawyer. (Alex Danvers, anyone?)

Supergirl Season 2 premieres October 10th on the CW.
