“Orphan Black” recap (4.10): She Keeps Me Warm

Outside, Sarah is hobbling along the dark beach all alone. She calls her mum to say she needs help, but Ferdinand is there, which doesn’t bode well for Sarah.

Inside, Rachel washes off the knife she used to stab her mother (AND PUTS IT BACK IN THE KNIFE BLOCK), pours herself a glass of wine, sits at a fancy computer with the Neolution Bible, and Skypes Van Lier. She says the science is secure, which I feel like maybe is a lie, but it’s what Van Lier wanted to hear, so Mr. Westmoreland will see her now. The doorbell rings and Rachel smiles a genuine, fucking terrifying smile.

I’ve never seen anything more unsettling. It’s the exact opposite of Cosima’s smile.

Phew. What a ride!

AND YOU GUYS.

COPHINE.

We went on a similar ride as Cosima, didn’t we? We spent so many months (MORE for us, actually) wondering what Delphine’s fate was. Knowing full well she could be dead, having no proof but the hope in our hearts that she wasn’t. And as queer woman after queer woman died on our TV screens, that hope got smaller and smaller. But that flame was never fully extinguished. Well, at least, not for some of us. I will say, I feel pretty vindicated right now, because plenty of people told me I was crazy for hoping, for still watching this show that killed a queer character, for having faith that Tatiana Maslany wouldn’t do this to me.

Right after the Season 3 finale aired, I did for a while think she was really dead, because the showrunners were saying it, because I knew Evelyne was in other things, because they did the fake death thing with Helena already. But then as time went on I dove into a sea of hope (fed by the river of denial). And gosh all those months of torture were almost worth it to watch Cosima’s face as she watched in disbelief as Delphine showed up to save her, on the Island of Dr. Moreau of all places!

Next season is the show’s final season, which we knew all along would happen, but is still sad to think about. I’m not sure what Evelyne’s availability will be like, though they already set it up so she has a reasonable excuse to not be around without needing to shoot her again. And they have the cure now, so maybe we won’t have to worry about her dropping dead at any second for the first time in four seasons.

As sad as I am about the end of the show, I think the fact that five seasons is all they wanted, and that they know ahead of time, means that this epic show will go out on top, on its own terms. And I think it will be amazing. This show is such a complicated, messy, intricate, nuanced bundle of awesome, I have no doubt that its final season will feel like a 10-hour series finale, full of Tatiana blowing our minds time and time again.
