“Orphan Black” recap (4.05): Oh, Baby

At Bright Born, Susan Duncan goes to the pool and finds Cosima (who introduces herself as her alias) there reading the contract she got when she arrived.

And looking more perfect than the perfect Bright Born babies.

Cosima goes over some of the shadier parts of the contract, trying to play like a bio major, sounding a lot like she’s getting her doctorate in EvoDevo. But she channels Sarah while she talks, managing to swipe Susan’s ID card while mentioning how strange it is that all the Bright Born babies have dimples.

When Susan mentions Embryonic Enhancements and says they can eliminate genetic risk factors, Cosima brings up something called germline editing, which is dangerous, and though Susan mentions its illegality, it sounded more like a non-confession confession. It reminds me of a line from Repo! The Genetic Opera, “So why care for these petty obsessions? Your designer heart still beats with common blood. And what if you could have genetic perfection? Would you change who you are if you could?”

(Side note: I just did a quick search of my Google Drive to find which recap I mentioned Repo! in earlier this week [Wynonna Earp] and saw that I also referenced the show way back in S1E7, when we first go to Club Neolution.)

Across town, Sarah and Kira go back to the safe house and are unpleasantly surprised to find Adele there with Felix. Sarah and Felix go at it, and Mrs. S pulls them and their argument into the next room while Kira assures Adele that this is a regular occurrence.

I dunno, I still think she’s an imposestra. (hehe)

Sarah and Felix continue to bicker, and Mrs. S tries to calm them down but does agree that bringing Adele to the safe house before she was fully vetted was a dumb move. Felix calls them both paranoid, but Sarah snaps at him that she’s already running a DNA test so they’ll be able to end this fight once and for all now won’t they? (“Not without consequences,” the wobbly music seems to say.)

At Bright Born, Donnie sneaks up on Cosima to tell her, in a panic, that there’s another clone here. After some not-very-tactful-but-also-not-wrong descriptions of her, Cosima realizes that it’s Krystal and tells him just to get rid of her.

When Donnie does find Krystal, she’s slinking around like something out of a Nancy Drew fanfic written by Cher Horowitz. He pretends he works at Bright Born and between the two of them awkwardly trying not to blow their own covers, Krystal ends up asking him to book her a massage, and he pretends to do just that. He names himself Ronnie (*facepalm*) and tells her to take her dress off and lay on her face…for the massage, of course.

Donnie starts to give Krystal a massage, and Krystal goes into her typical spill-her-guts routine. Which I imagine is caused in part because she lacks a social filter a lot of people have, but probably also in part because she’s lonely. Donnie uses her obvious disdain for pregnant women to change the topic of conversation to Bright Born, and she starts telling him about all of her research, and how she thinks they’re doing human experiments here.

Probably not something to tell someone you think works here, but you do you.

Krystal talks about a woman with teeth where her eyelashes should be, and about how she thinks she’s being targeted because she knows too much and won’t keep quiet about it. She’s just so grateful that the French, blonde doctor saved her.

*record scratch*

Donnie breaks his charade and says, “Dr. Cormier?” and Krystal gets freaked out, wondering how he knew that name, and then in trying to reassure her, says HER name, so she smacks him, kicks him where the sun don’t shine, and huffs out of the room.

May 13th shall henceforth be known as Tatiana’s Back Appreciation Day

Sadly, as exciting as it was to hear her name again, this gives NO CLUES about Delphine’s life status, since we saw all that happen last season.
