“Orphan Black” recap (4.04): Control

Mrs. S gets a text from Sarah asking Ferdinand to meet her at Beth’s and off he goes. But it’s not Sarah who meets him there, but a laptop MK is skyping in on. Ferdinand is amused and ready to chat with Sarah’s source, but as soon as he sits in front of the computer, he hears that telltale click of a pressure bomb being set off. MK walks in for real, now that she has the power in the situation, and says hello to Ferdinand like she’s been waiting a real long time to do just that.

Baaaaa.

MK lights some candles and starts telling Ferdinand all the things she knows about him.

Meanwhile, Sarah finds a newspaper clipping in MK’s trailer and both she and Ferdinand realize the same thing at the same time: MK is from Helsinki.

Ferdinand isn’t as surprised as you’d think; he suspected one survived the purge. Because apparently they didn’t count bodies. MK pulls her hair back to reveal her scars, and Ferdinand somehow knows her name is Veera.

I’m so proud of us for calling this.

MK says that Niki was her only friend, so young, having just started out on her life’s journey when her family was gassed, when she was burned alive.

Sarah, realizing now what MK has been planning, calls Mrs. S to talk to Ferdinand, and they both realize what happened, so Sarah zips to Beth’s apartment. Cosima calls Sarah while they’re on the way and says they figured out what the bots do, and Sarah knows from her voice that she’s not going to like the answer.

MK breaks down, telling Ferdinand that he killed six of her sestras, along with 32 of their loved ones. Which leaves me with a lot of questions about what that was like. Were they like a clone commune? Were they self-aware? Or did they think they were just from the same egg donor like Alison’s mother convinced herself about Alison and Cosima?

Anyway, Ferdinand asks why MK thinks he won’t just stand up and kill her right here and now, but MK knows he’s chickenshit and too much of a narcissist to sacrifice himself like that.

Not as innocent as her love for powdered iced tea suggests.

Or maybe it’s because of Rachel. Yes, she knows about the ProClone and his feelings for her. But MK doesn’t care and starts splashing gasoline around and on Ferdinand. Sarah shows up and begs MK to stop; she knows about Helsinki, but this isn’t the way. She asks if Beth knew, but MK couldn’t tell Beth, she was fragile and paranoid enough as it was. Sarah knows Ferdinand is a steaming pile of manure, but he saved Sarah’s life, so she has to try to save his. This isn’t the way to make him pay for all he’s done.
