“The 100” recap (3.13): Two if by Sea

Flashback Pike teaches the kids how to make fire from friction. He says that this once helped mankind survive on earth, and maybe would again someday. Octavia watches him like he’s performing magic, so he calls on her to answer the question, “What’s the key to survival on Earth?” Her answer is simply, “Not dying.”

She’s not wrong.

Everyone laughs at her and makes jokes but Pike can’t laugh with them, can’t smile knowing what they’re about to go through. He says that the key is to keep fighting. Because once you give up, you’re as good as dead.

In present-day Polis, Pike is put in a cell with the other prisoners who won’t take the City of Light chip, and Murphy and Indra are there, too. Indra is so happy to see Pike because she has worked her chain peg free and plans on using it to give him 300 cuts, one for every soldier he slaughtered in their sleep.

Meanwhile, on Cairn Island, Clarke says they should make a plan. Octavia already made one, and it’s split up and start searching for answers at first light, so that was easy. Octavia uses her Earth Skills to make a fire, and I’m so proud of my little Floorheda.

“Thank you Jasper and Bellamy, for being useless as usual.”

Bellamy tries to act normal and casually pick up Lincoln’s notebook, but Octavia almost bites his hand off taking it back from him. He’s annoyed, expecting to have been absolved by now, but she explains that the shit he pulled, ESPECIALLY after having come so far from the douchebro he was in Season 1, is not going to be something she wakes up one day just totally over.

Quite frankly, he’s lucky she didn’t knock him out and leave him in the rover.

For something to do besides awkwardly listen to the Blake siblings fight, and probably still not too keen to talk to Clarke, Jasper tosses a radioactive pine branch into the fire, and the fire burns green for a minute. Octavia looks at her notebook and realizes that this IS how they contact Luna. It’s a signal fire.

And then Clarke Griffin dares to have hope for a heartbeat or two.

“What’s happening to my face? Why is my mouth twisting like this?”
