“Orphan Black” recap (4.02): Beneath the surface

Meanwhile, Scott is a little concerned with Kendall’s blood test results, but she tells him she knows she has leukemia and would like it to be a secret. She just got reconnected with her family; she doesn’t want their time together ruined by pitying glances and people doting on her. So Scott promises to keep her secret.

Felix sneaks Sarah into Neolution and finally Sarah asks why Felix is being so weird. He’s hardly said anything sarcastic all night. So Felix admits to Sarah that he’s been looking for his birth family. Sarah is offended; SHE is his family. Mrs. S, Kira, they’re his family, they always have been. But Felix says that they’re Sarah’s family, now that they know they’re all actually related. Plus she’s got a new sestrahood…how is he supposed to compete with that?

He’s done talking about this, so he heads out to the dance floor, and a man approaches Sarah, calling her MK. She plays along, following him to a quieter room where he shows her a video he dug up for her about the implanted tech she had been asking about. In the video, people poke around in a dude’s mouth, where a worm is clearly wiggling around inside the guy’s cheek. These people then use a scalpel to try to get it out, and the thing like explodes, sending the video into chaos. The man explains that the NeoWorms have a built-in defense, and it kills the host if you try to remove it like that. So I guess that explains why the EMS Grim Reapers were cutting out entire sections of cheek. When Sarah doesn’t say anything, the man asks what’s wrong with her, and after a beat, he realizes it’s not MK after all.

As soon as Sarah runs outside, she gets a text from MK asking her to meet, so she leaves Felix a voicemail and runs off.

MK had her meet in a laundromat and calls Sarah as soon as she arrives. She’s watching from a security camera and makes Sarah put her second phone in a dryer and her boots on the table before she’ll talk. Sarah thanks MK for saving them in Iceland, and asks for more information, but MK is afraid. Sharing information with her sestra is what killed Beth. She doesn’t want it to kill Sarah, too.

Flash back to Beth doing her makeup, gun close at hand, plus what looks like a hotel key. She’s shaking and twitching, whether it’s fear or drugs is anyone’s guess. She pulls a blonde wig on and repeats an encouraging mantra to herself, trying to get the nerve to do something.

What on earth are you up to, Ms. Childs?

Art, who had been absently watching footage of his ex-partner, hoping for a clue, sees Beth come out of the bathroom with a blonde wig on and is intrigued. Fast forward to the part where she comes home, and Beth runs in, frantic, shaking more than when she left. She pulls off the wig and looks at the gun in her hand, the blood on her knuckles. She tags a swig of booze and almost shoots MK’s head off when the sheepish clone pops up from behind the counter.

Baaaaahh!

MK is there because she was worried, Beth stopped answering her calls, stopped answering everyone’s calls. She’s worried about the blood on Beth’s hand, but Beth assures her sweet Mika that it isn’t her own blood. MK begs Beth to talk to her. Which is a huge deal. MK, the recluse, a listener not a talker, someone who likes to watch but never be seen. Someone who hides behind masks and screens, who is an observer, not a participator, who is a secretive loner. Mika is now standing in front of Beth, no mask on her face, no screen between them, and she’s asking Beth to talk to her. To open up, to let her in, to let her help.
