“Black Sails” recap (3.08): You and I Both

Previously on Black Sails, Rogers had plans to transport Jack and the Urca gold he took from Anne, but Vane and Flint have plans to intercept it; Silver bashed Dufresne’s head; Max and Eleanor almost burned down the tavern with their electric connection; and Max warned Eleanor about some rumors going around about her and Rogers.

Vane and Flint are waiting around in a house, and Vane is grossed out by the settle-down-iness of it all. Flint is surprised he’s never imagined a comfortable life. Anne is like, “Seriously dudes? Stop bickering about china patterns and focus on what’s important!” If they miss Jack or if someone finds them, they’re doomed. Flint promises no one is looking for them, and that they can’t just guess which road Rogers is coming down. Anne says they HAVE to guess. If they miss the caravan, all he misses is money and maybe the war he’s been itching for. She loses so much more.

Flint says they all have the same end goal, even if their motives and stakes vary. Billy pops in to say he sees a caravan, so the gang heads out.

Jack is in the dungeon, giving a mouse advice about being ambitious and not settling for scraps when Rogers drags him out into a carriage. Rogers tells Jack he’s being taken to Havana and promises him that Anne is fine, despite being dicked over.

Princess Madi and John Silver have a whole storyline in this episode that I honestly wasn’t following, but I think the general gist of it was that Princess Madi is a badass and can make the tough decisions, meaning she’s a great leader and a huge asset to Silver if he plays his cards right.

On Nassau, in the tavern, Georgia fully…erm…services Max. And I mean it’s downright softcore porn. But like…classy.

Georgia (who has quite an adorable accent) comments on the fact that Max is here later into the morning than usual, and asks if she’s avoiding something. When Max doesn’t answer, she mentions that Mrs. Mapleton chose her because she’s new, and has no reason to gossip or judge Max. Max knows exactly what this is, though; she knows all the games. Hell, she invented half of them. And if Georgia ever wants to see Max in all her glory ever again, she’ll never try to pull that shit again.

There’s a knock at the door, and someone tells her Miss Guthrie is downstairs asking for her. Max’s face does a thing that I would like to imagine is a combination of being sad it’s not Eleanor in her bed, and also sadness at the knowledge that Eleanor is here to tell her Anne’s fate.

Eleanor side-eyes Georgia as she leaves Max’s room and heads inside to talk to Max. Eleanor tells her that the cash and Jack are on their way, and even though Anne was angry to learn she had been betrayed, she’s still alive and unharmed. She sent eight men to ensure it.

Max starts to panic. She’s like, “You mean to tell me that Anne found out not only that she was betrayed and lied to, but also that she wasn’t going to be broke and Jackless, and she just walked away? That sounds fake but okay.”

She says that eight men or eight hundred, Anne would have died fighting the men who were standing between her and Jack. Something shady is going on.

Jack muses about Havana to Rogers, and what it might be like when he gets there, and Rogers asks why he’s talking about it like it’s not a sure thing. Jack says that if Anne is alive, there’s no way she’s letting him go without a fight. His white knight will come save him. Rogers scoffs, saying that all of these Nassau natives have this insane and stubborn belief in a better outcome. There’s no way anyone could know the route they’re taking! He’s cocksure and smug about it.

On Nassau, Max and Eleanor try to tell one of Rogers’ men that Flint and Anne are going to try to stop the caravan, and he all but pats them on the heads and tells them not to worry their feminine little brains.

He says that just because Rogers thrusts–er, he means trusts her doesn’t mean everyone does. Besides, there’s no way anyone could know the route they’re taking! Max says that she knows, because of course she does. He looks affronted, but when she promises she has the information contained, he tells them to leave him alone and that there’s nothing to worry about.

Eleanor knows there’s something to worry about, though, so she goes to Hornigold and tells him that he better fucking listen to her or else.

Eleanor drags him around in the mud for a bit before convincing him to help her. He tries to play it off like it’s because of his unfinished business with Flint but probably he’s a little afraid of her.

Rogers’ caravan is trucking along, and while Jack is reminiscing about his calico days of yore, a ruckus kicks up outside. Jack smirks like “I told you so” and uses the distraction to attack Rogers. Eventually, the carriage gets knocked over, and Anne runs to find Jack smooshed beneath the rubble.

When he starts to grunt and move, Anne kisses him, so happy he’s alive. They grab the cash and jack and start to make a break for it, but more men are coming, so Vane hangs back. He gets in a tussle with Rogers and eventually gets captured by the backup men.

Eleanor and Max meet up again on the island, and Eleanor is worried about the number of soldiers getting sick on top of everything. Their forces are dwindling, Flint is trying to start a war against Rogers, and if the gold and Jack get taken, they could have a war against Spain on their hands, too.

Max, saying the phrase “you and I” about a billion times, says that the two of them can handle illness and Flint and Spain…the bigger problem here is that if someone besides them knew about the caravan, there’s a spy among them.

Rogers comes back, beaten and bloody, and Eleanor runs to his side, leaving Max standing alone. Partially sad to be abandoned without a blink, partially scared for what this means for their future.

Anne and Jack go back to Flint to tell him Vane was taken, so he wants them to take the cash, and he’ll double back and save Vane. Billy says that that’s the stupidest idea he’s ever had-and he’s had plenty-and insists that Flint is the only one who can lead this war. Jack agrees, saying Vane would be super pissed if it was Flint that showed up to save him.

So it’s decided, Flint, Jack and Anne will go back to the ship, and Billy will take two men and save Vane.

In Rogers’ office, Eleanor looks out the window, stressing out that Vane is in the dungeon right this very second.

Rogers says that she gave them an advantage, sending Hornigold to Flint’s ship, but that if it doesn’t work, Flint will have the upper hand.

Rogers makes her look at him and says that he needs to know he can count on her, despite all the factors working to try to make her regress into the Eleanor Guthrie, who used to run this island. He asks her for the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so she drops a few bombs on him: When he first came to her, all she could think about was getting revenge on Vane.

Also, she’s devoted to him now, and she has no idea how she’ll react when she sees Vane again.

But we’re going to find out real soon because the episode ends with her in Vane’s cell, the two of them face to face once more.

What did you think of “XXVI”? Will Eleanor and Max ever stop torturing my heart and just kiss already?
