LGBT Films & Women Lose at the 2016 Oscars

Last night’s 88th Annual Oscars were underwhelming except for a few choice moments. Although there were several categories queer women and films were nominated, the only win we could celebrate were Best Supporting Actress for Alicia Vikander for her role in The Danish Girl.

And while Lady Gaga gave a killer performance of her song “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground, Sam Smith took home Best Original Song and dedicated his win to the LGBT community. Unfortunately, he also said he was the first out gay man to win an Oscar, which set the internet on fire.

Although Carol lost in every single category it was nominated in, host Chris Rock still managed to make a sexist joke, saying it was the “third best girl-on-girl movie” he’s seen all year. A lazy joke in an otherwise smartly irreverent set of comedy that received a lot of praise from viewers and laughs from the crowd of nominees.
