“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (12.10): I want to be alone

We knew it would be hard to top last week’s stellar episode of Grey’s Anatomy, so this week, Grey’s eased us back into the show with a more ensemblesque episode, including Meredith doing a lot of lesbian processing.

We start with Meredith, who is smiling a lot, which means she hates life right now. She’s attending Bailey-ordered therapy to deal with her ordeal, and she’s taking it surprisingly well. Her new therapist is like, “Wow, this was a terrible thing you went through” and Mer is like, “Mofo, you should see the other shit they’ve put me through.”

Things aren’t going so well for the recently reunited Jo and Alex. They are still distant, and not really talking. Also, their loft looks like it’s part of the Litchfield prison loading dock, don’t you think?

At the hospital, Owen is still fuming about Riggs being there, which makes things even more stressful for April, who is caught in the middle. When a cardio patient comes in, Bailey makes her page Riggs to assist with Owen. The two men fight like little baby boys, and it only stops when a damn ambulance blows up.

Alex has a young patient, who is smarter than all of the interns put together. She’s specifically sought Dr. Karev out, although she is a little confused about his brief time making buttholes for babies. Aren’t we all. Her name is Maya, and the 15-year-old has already had a leg amputation due to bone cancer. Now the cancer is back and in her sternum, which sounds awful tricky. Maya knows that Grey Sloan is known for it’s ground-breaking surgeries, so she wants to know what they suggest for her. Maya’s mom kind of stays in the background, letting her very bright daughter talk her way through her illness.

The guys from the ambulance explosion are rushed in. One of the paramedics thinks the explosion was his fault, after leaving the oxygen unsecured. His partner is badly injured. Owen and Riggs continue their fight over the guy’s chest wounds. Riggs is like, “Let me do my job” to which Owen responds with something like “La la la la, I can’t hear you.” DeLuca gets stuck with the guy they brought in who has heartburn from eating too many burritos. Been there, my friend. Richard works with DeLuca, who keeps getting texts and pissing Richard off.

While Alex waits for Callie and Maggie to give him a consult about Maya, he asks Jo if they can spend some time together that night. Jo already has plans with friends and doesn’t want Alex there. Alex takes the rejection like a champ, but you can tell the guy is hurting. When Callie and Maggie arrive, they suggest some cutting edge treatments, but Alex wants to go the safest route. This displeases Maya, who wanted to hear about some daring new treatments. So, what’s a girl to do? Fire her doctor, that’s what.

Meredith’s therapy sessions take place over several weeks, but they are interspersed through this one day at Grey Sloan. Her doctor asks who visited her the most, and that’s of course, Alex. Meredith nearly busts a gut when the therapist asks if she’s in love with Alex. Nope, she was only in love with her first person, Cristina. She is worried about Alex and his situation with Jo, though.

Blonde intern, who hasn’t earned my recollection of his name yet, is all stressed out about Maya firing them. He’s worried that it will go on his permanent record. I hope it does. Speaking of interns, DeLucca meets Maggie in the supply closet to tell her to go easy on the texts. She was worried that he was injured in the explosion, and he finds it rather endearing. Meredith calls it hovering. Maggie is a hoverer. Not in a bad way, though, as she tells the shrink.

Remember how Callie and Penny were dating? So do I. I did not recall that they broke up though and neither did anyone on Twitter. The two women have an awkward exchange in the hallway where Callie wants to process, and Penny makes explosion sounds. It’s weird, and such a lez thing to happen, it’s not even funny.

We go back to Meredith, talking about how she didn’t mess up Calliopenny. She explains that she took Penny under her wing, but Callie thinks that Mer came between them. Her poor therapist is just trying to keep all these people straight. He asks Meredith who Callie is. Um, only the super hot bisexual ortho-doc who survived a head-on collision and a messy breakup with the cutest pediatric surgeon alive.

Owen and Amelia have a moment alone where they make some small talk. Amelia is living at the hospital right now, which is fine because everyone else has. He invites her to stay with him, but she suggests dinner instead.

Maya decides to get a consult directly from Callie and Maggie. They suggest a 3-D printed new sternum, which sounds pretty cool. Alex is taken aback by all of this, but Maya reminds him that she fired him. The ladydocs are geeked, and so is Maya, but Alex fears it’s too risky. He’s outnumbered.

That night, over pizza at Meredith’s, Callie and Alex fight more about the case until Maggie tells them to zip it. They are all trying to be there for Meredith. In fact, they have all been trying too hard to be there, that it’s driving Meredith bonkers. They sit around grumpily eating pizza while complaining about missing sex. Callie misses the hell out of Penny, and their apparently super hot sex life. Huh, who knew, Penny?

Mer tells her therapist how all the hovering and friendtime that Maggie orchestrates is getting to her, so he tells her to be honest with her friends. She is that evening and politely kicks everyone out. The next time Mer sees her doctor, she realizes that sending them all away didn’t make her feel any better. Maybe she actually needs them.

Good news! Richard is still playing Arizona’s wingman at the gay bar. This delights me, but how many trivia nights can the women of Seattle continue to ignore Arizona’s charms. I mean, look at her.

Richard and DeLuca have a little moment where they bond over secret and sexy hospital romances. Little does he know that DeLucca is DeSchupting his daughter.

At Jo’s loft, Steph, Penny and Ben are getting tanked and sharing their feelings. Jo misses Alex like hell, but at the same time, she wants to punch him about the face and neck. Penny misses Callie, too; Steph wants to meet someone, and Ben just sits back watching the sloppiness. He won’t even tell the ladies what guys want. How rude! Penny does tell her colleagues that women aren’t any easier. Preach it, Penny.

Also bonding are Riggs and April. April is kicking his ass at darts, and Riggs gives April a little insight into his relationship with Owen. Well, a tiny bit. Seriously, it’s not much. Back at the hospital, Amelia is ready for dinner with Owen, but he wants to back out. She figures he’s giving her the big brush off, but he actually decides to confide in her about his relationship with Riggs. They went to medical school together and were like brothers. Owen’s younger sister was a medical student as well, and way smarter and cooler than Owen. She fell for Riggs and one day, she was gone, and Owen blames Riggs. Getting that off his chest makes Owen feel closer to Amelia, especially when she brings up the fact that his sister loved Riggs, just like Derek loved Meredith. There must be some good in all that, and maybe he deserves another chance.

It’s time for the very brave Maya’s surgery, and Alex shows up to comfort her, even if she fired him. He holds her hand and talks her through her fears, like the great doctor he is. Jo sees the tenderness and care he shows to Maya, and she gets big heart eyes.

In therapy, Meredith discusses the first thing she remembered after the attack. This time, she says pain, but in their first session, it was the people all around her. Meredith tells him they were all just doing their jobs, but we all know they came together to save a beloved friend.

Owen takes the paramedic from the explosion into surgery, but he and April can’t stop the massive bleeding. Owen does what he knows is best for the patient and calls in Riggs. The two work together seamlessly and end up saving the man’s life. Afterwards, they nearly come to blows in the scrub room. Well, it was nice while it lasted.

At the same time, Callie and Maggie work on Maya’s new ribcage. Because the new implant is so stiff, they struggle to get it to fit. Freaked out because Maya doesn’t have anything protecting her heart and lungs now, they send Jo to talk to Alex. Callie and Maggie need to open up Maya’s ribcage to fit the implant in, but it’s very dangerous. Alex thinks they should go ahead. Maya is tough enough to handle it.

Meredith and her therapist get down to the heart of the matter. Meredith is feeling a lot of things. She’s not happy around her friends, but she doesn’t feel better alone. She needs to go through these feelings, and figure out who she is. She can’t hold on to the “widow” label anymore. Who is Meredith Grey now? Mer doesn’t know, but she’s going to have to find out.

Maya wakes from her surgery, and Alex calls her Iron Man, which is amazing. He shows her x-rays of her new sternum, and she gives him a wink to let him know he’s a pretty alright guy.

Back in therapy, Meredith’s doctor is ready to sign off on their sessions. Meredith feels awful, but that’s to be expected. She has a lot of feelings to go through. She is ready to move on, though.

Richard runs into Maggie and DeLuca on the elevator, and he puts two and two together. How does he feel about this new couple? Well, this says it all.

Callie and Penny run into each other in the stairwell of mystical make outs, and Callie confessed to missing Penny. Penny responds by pushing Callie up against a wall and kissing her. I guess Calliopenny is back on.

Also back on is Jolex. After watching Alex with Jo, she is ready to bury the hatchet. Or, at least, her face in his face. And Meredith? Well, she’s ready for something new. I can’t wait to see what that is.
