Ask AfterEllen.com (March 17, 2009)

Want to know the status of a particular movie, TV show, or band? Wondering what a certain actress is up to these days? Send your entertainment-related questions to [email protected] – with your first name, city and country – and we’ll try to answer as many as we can.

Question: When is the 3Way DVD coming out?

– Diana, Ames, Iowa

Question: What is the status of 3way season two? Is it being filmed or planned? I loved that show and can’t wait to see more of it!

– Arielle

Answer: We’ve received a lot of questions on these two topics over the last few months, and we finally have an answer! To one of them, at least.

The first season of 3Way will be released on DVD on Dinah Shore weekend (i.e. the first weekend in April), according to the 3Way producers. They plan to post more details on 3WayTV.tv soon, but the short version is that it will be available to purchase at Dinah, and on their website (and yes, it will be available to international buyers) within a few weeks.

No word on a second season yet. They’ve been shopping the show to networks, and even in the best economy, that can take forever.

I’ll be bummed if the show ends after one season, but between the episodes, the confessionals, the behind-the-scenes segments, and the extras (I hear there’s some additional Lady Cops footage!), the first season will definitely be worth buying if you’re a fan of the show.

And for those who aren’t familiar with the series, you’ll be happy to know it doesn’t revolve around this:

(Yes, I had too much fun photoshopping this.)

In other 3Way-related news, the very-much-alive Maile Flanagan appears in this summer’s (500) Days of Summer, and she can also be heard regularly voicing the hugely popular anime character Naruto.

Jill Bennett voices a lesbian character in one of the episodes of the recently-released on DVD second season of Rick & Steve, Logo’s animated gay series. Maeve Quinlan‘s most recent film, Not Easily Broken, will be released on DVD on April 7. (You can also see her on 90210.)

Cathy Shim can be seen in a slew of upcoming films later this year, including White on Rice and The People I’ve Slept With – both of which also co-star Lynn Chen of Saving Face fame (sadly, Cathy’s character does not sleep Lynn’s in either of them) – as well as the horror movie The Revenant, and the Sean Astin/Michael Vartan comedy Demoted.

Shim also has a small role in the new indie movie Why Am I Doing This, which revolves around two straight men – a struggling African American comedian and a struggling Asian American Actor – and co-stars Lynn Chen, Sheetal Sheth (I Can’t Think Straight, The World Unseen), and Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). That and the humorous trailer (love the last scene) is enough to convince me to keep an eye out for it at the festivals.

Finally, Nancylee Myatt, Paige Bernhardt, and Courtney Rowe have been busy creating the fun and educational online series Cocktail Chicks for InTheLandofCocktails.com, a website launched by Ti Martin and Lally Brennan – the proprietors (and best-selling authors) of the legendary New Orleans restaurant Commander’s Palace – to be “the ultimate insider’s journey into the dynamic culture of cocktails, wine and food from America’s first party town, New Orleans.” Warning: these episodes will make you thirsty! (And hungry!)

Question: What is Jane Lynch working on now? She is fabulous to the extreme.

– Claire Taylor, Birmingham, AL

Answer: Jane is busier than a lesbian cat in a room full of rocking chairs, as usual. You can see her in the series Party Down, a dry comedy by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas launching this week about a group of hapless caterers in L.A. who are all trying to make it in Hollywood.

The tagline says it all: “It takes talent to act like you care.”

Bonus for AfterEllen.com readers: The other female caterer employee is played by Lizzy Caplan, of Tru Blood, The Class, and Janis Ian/Mean Girls fame.

The series definitely has the makings of a hit, between the good acting, the awkward humor, and the parade of former Veronica Mars stars. But while it has some very funny moments – including Jane’s character (who is straight) freaking out in the second episode when someone makes a gay joke at a Young Republicans party – there aren’t quite enough of them to guarantee it’ll be a hit. But it’s good enough that I’ll keep watching to see if it finds its rhythm.

The series debuts Friday on Starz, but you can watch the first episode online now. And on May 19, catch Lynch on Fox as a psychotic cheerleading coach.in Ryan Murphy‘s (Nip/Tuck) high school musical series Glee.

Question: My teenage niece is struggling with being gay and Christian (she recently came out). Are there any movies or books I can give her that might help?

– Patti, Chicago, Illinois

Answer: The Gay Christian Network just released a new documentary on DVD today called Through My Eyes, in which queer Christian youth talk about their experiences.

Here’s the trailer:

The DVD sold out a few minutes after midnight (i.e. as soon as it became available), but I’m sure they’re working to replace the stock as quickly as possible.

Question: I was wondering if the Blood Ties series from Lifetime will be put on a DVD set in the US and/or if this series will ever come back to Lifetime?

– Candy Gallagher, Bakersfierld, CA. USA

Answer: The vampire/private-eye drama starring Christina Cox is definitely not coming back to Lifetime (Grrr. Arrggh.). But the first half of the season – i.e. the first 11 episodes (the show was produced as one 22-episode season, but Lifetime split it in half and called it two seasons) – is finally coming to DVD in the U.S. on June 2nd.

The box art was just released this month:

The second half of the season, or “Season 2” if you want to indulge Lifetime, is tentatively scheduled to be released in September, according to BloodTiesCentral.com.

Question: I really like NBC’s new show Kings, but it seems like they’re wasting Susanna Thompson’s talent (and the other actresses). Does she get to do more later? And how did the first episode do in the ratings?

– Sandra, Bethesda, Maryland

Answer: I really like Kings, too, but you and I are among the small number who do, apparently: Monday night’s premiere drew only 6 million viewers, which makes it NBC’s second-worst debut of the season. Even the new episode of Trump’s tired Celebrity Apprentice reality show pulled in more viewers, which is just sad.

Kings is too complicated to explain here read AfterElton.com’s review if you want an overview and it definitely requires more patience than most shows on TV today. It also requires more thinking, which is one of the things I like about it, but is probably why it didn’t go over so well with Americans.

As for the female characters on the show, it’s true they aren’t nearly as prominent as the male characters. But I’ve seen the first four episodes, and the show’s three leading female characters Queen Rose Benjamin (Susanna Thompson), Princess Michelle (Allison Miller), and Thomasina (Marlyne Afflack) do get more interesting, and get a little more to do.

Thompson really comes into her own around the fourth episode, when we learn the Queen isn’t quite the innocent, hands-off wife she at first seems to be. It’s fascinating to watch her character unfold.

It helps that Thompson is excellent in pretty much everything she does – from a manipulative matriarch, to a depressed divorcee, to a Borg Queen bent on assimilating the human race.

(Before you ask: no, there’s still no news about the release of the third season of Once and Again on DVD, in which Thompson’s Karen finally finds love, and we get the whole Katie-Jessie storyline. I’ll let you know if/when there’s anything new to report.)

Please, give Kings a chance, and save television from Khloe Kardashian and Joan Rivers trying to sell more wedding dresses than Clint Black and Dennis Rodman!
