“Work Out New York” recap (1.5): Pros

This week’s Work Out New York begins with Joe and Noah on another bro date where they are getting mani/pedis and talking about boyzilians. Joe shares some history with us: “Before World War II it was the men who dressed as pretty as possible.” He then refers to himself as a “lion” with a “cool ass mane.” “The lionesses are just bald. They’re boring. They ain’t got shit.”

You guys, I truly thought Joe was gay this whole time. I think it was based on the “gogo boy” thing, but I was operating under the assumption that he was family, so I hated him a little less. But now that I know he’s a straight douchebag, I can fully rag on him because he’s the worst of all time.

Speaking of, Courtney and Layla break down their conversations (confrontations) with Joe at Lindsey’s birthday. Despite Courtney and Joe squashing things, Courtney says he still doesn’t believe him. He’s Team Layla.

Holly has a meeting with a new exercise app called Radius, and they tell her how amazing she is, but that they obviously cannot work with her because she is already tied up with Nike and FlyWheel and all of her millions of brand associations. (GET IT, GIRL!) So she has the difficult task of naming three other trainers that could do the job. She gives them Courtney, Noah and Lena. “I put my name on the line for them, so they need to crush it,” Holly tells the camera, and I am already prepared for the drama that’s about to go down when Layla does not get the call.

Courtney goes to meet Layla’s mom, Mama Love, and asks for advice about his shoulder injury. Thankfully she tells him, from experience, that he needs to take care of it before it gets worse. He’s worried about missing work and having a younger trainer come in and take his clients. He’s also not interested in going home to Louisianna to recoup, as he hasn’t talked with his mother in close to a year. (Family drama.) Mama Love says he needs to figure that out, too. FORESHADOWING.

Lindsey and Layla are planning an event together, but Layla is MIA. Lindsey complains to her roommate Lauren about how she has been doing all of the work. EVEN MORE FORESHADOWING.

At the gym, the trainers are training, and Layla has a client named Big Booty. She explains why boxing is going to be a big part of her new gym with Jay. Courtney’s client, meanwhile, is the kind that complains for most of the workout. (I feel you, girl.)

While all together, Lena receives a call from Radius, and everyone cheers. And then Courtney receives the same call, more cheers. And then Noah, who immediately acts like he’s above the opportunity. Courtney says it best: “Really bitch? Girl, please.” Layla is the lonely only who wasn’t recommended by Holly.

Later that week, Holly is setting up for a basketball clinic she’s putting on for kids in Brooklyn. Noah is there to help and he thanks her for the Radius opportunity before telling her he thinks he might have the same conflict of interest that she does. Holly tells the camera she isn’t exactly sure what kinds of brands Noah is affiliated with, but he could be missing out on something big with Radius if he passes on it. But he does, and recommends Joe instead, who Holly thinks is a wild card but says OK. She calls Joe, and he accepts because he is less proud than Noah.

Layla and Joe show up to help with the kids, too, but Noah is the one that continually irks her while she’s trying to run the show. Holly tells the children and their parents about playing in the WNBA and has the newspaper clipping to prove it. Everyone is enthralled.

Holly is encouraging to everyone, getting them involved in drills and Holly is in her element, enforcing cheering for everyone and team huddles and chants. The trainers even group hug before the conversation turns to Joe. (NO MO’ JOE.)

“Life is about timing, you guys. Maybe you guys aren’t ready to be friends right now,” Holly offers.

Another day, Courtney and Holly are doing cardio together, which is not fun for Courtney because he’d rather be lifting weights, but he can’t, not with his shoulder so fucked up. He’s going to get some X-Rays, finally, and tells Holly she is inspiring him to make it through.

Someone slept with Joe. He met her on Tinder, but his “management and publicist made him deactivate the account.”

ANYWAY. It’s time for Lindsey and Layla’s event, but Layla is late. Holly is there to support, and Noah shows up, showing off, and Holly thinks he needs to, once again, settle the fuck down and let other people do their thing. Joe shows up right as Layla and Lindsey get into it post-workout. Layla says she doesn’t like to plan; Lindsey doesn’t work like that. The conversation doesn’t end so well, with no resolution.

Lena and her boyfriend, Nick, are working out together when he mentions he’s happy she’s done with her “competition bullshit.” But Lena is “married to her career,” she says and is hopeful that the Radius gig could turn things around for her. Nick wants more time with Lena, but he’s not really saying it in a romantic way; more in a possessive way. Bye Nick!

Courtney goes to get an MRI, and it’s as he feared: Arthritis. Holly is there with him for the diagnosis and the surgery talk with the doc. He will have to take eight weeks off of work to recover. Holly offers it could be a little less time. The other doc must be a Holly-ite.

Next week, Holly tells Noah he’s being a dick.
