Lady Gaga, “Mozart in the Jungle” win at the 2016 Golden Globes

Despite a number of LGBT shows and people up for Golden Globes last night, none of them went home with a Gold statue. Queer-themed films Carol, and The Danish Girl and Grandma lost to muli-winner The Revenant while TV shows like Transparent and Orange is the New Black were less popular with the HPAA this year than Mozart in the Jungle, which won Best television series, musical or comedy.

We were thrilled, though, to see Lady Gaga win Best performance by an actress in a leading role in a series, limited series or motion picture made for television. The bisexual pop star turned actress won for her queer role as the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel, beating Queen Latifah for Bessie. In her speech, Gaga nervously thanked creator Ryan Murphy and her co-stars.

Taraji P. Henson won Best performance by an actress in a TV series, drama for her role as Cookie Lyon in Fox’s Empire, beating Viola Davis in her bisexual role as Annalise Keating on How to Get Away With Murder. My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rachel Bloom won Best performance by an actress in a television series, musical or comedy over Lily Tomlin for Grace & Frankie. Best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series, limited series or motion picture made for television went to The Affair‘s Maura Tierney, leaving Uzo Aduba and Judith Light empty-handed.

Both actors who played trans women on screen this year, Eddie Redmayne and Jeffrey Tambor, also lost to Leonardo DiCaprio and Gael Garcia Bernal, respectively and were subject to tacky jokes from host Ricky Gervais. Despite the prevalence of male ego, there were bright spots from presenters America Ferrera and Eva Longoria, who introduced themselves as not the other handful of Latina stars you might think they are (Eva Mendes, Gina Rodriguez, Charro).

Jennifer Lawrence won for her starring role in Joy, beating best friend Amy Schumer, although they shared a comical moment together on stage when they presented an award earlier in the night.

And one of the best suits of the night went to Denzel Washington’s daughter, who took the stage with her dad when he accepted the Cecil B. Demille award.
