“Carol,” “Orange is the New Black,” “HTGAWM” and other LGBT SAG nominees

The Screen Actors Guild nominations came out this morning and while Lily Tomlin and her fantastic film Grandma were snubbed, there were a lot of other great LGBT-themed movies and TV shows among the nominees. What makes the SAG Awards so exciting is that actors are nominated and voted for by their peers in SAG-AFTRA, and are often early predictors of what films will get Oscar nods.

The Danish Girls Eddie Redmayne is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for playing trans pioneer Lili Elbe. Co-star Alicia Vikander is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her part as Lili’s wife and real life artist Gerda Wegener.

Carol star Cate Blanchett is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role while on-screen love interest Rooney Mara takes on Alicia Vikander in Supporting.

Queen Latifah and Christina Ricci are both up for their queer roles in Bessie and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, respectively, as they are nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries.

Viola Davis could take home the win for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series as bisexual Annalise Keating in How to Get Away With Murder, the same role she won an Emmy for earlier this year.

Jeffrey Tambor is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series based on his strong performance as trans woman Maura Pfefferman in Transparent. Uzo Aduba is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Orange is the New Black. Both actors also join their casts in nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The winners will be announced live during a ceremony on January 30, airing on both TNT and TBS.
