Morning Brew – St. Vincent interviews Rooney Mara for “Interview”

Good morning!

Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver are set to star in a new film about “an ace assassin who is double-crossed by gangsters and falls into the hands of rogue surgeon known as ‘The Doctor,’ who turns him into a woman.” The very idea of Tomboy is upsetting GLAAD and out trans actress Jamie Clayton, and rightfully so.

In better news, Jamie’s on-screen Sense 8 love Freema Agyeman touched on Nomanita in a new interview. A quote:

There are a lot of channels that would argue they have LGBT relationships but we’re not talking about touching on it and moving on, it’s about fully exploring it. Netflix is out there dancing to its own drumbeat. I can feel a momentum shift. TV is becoming so much more complex than it once was.

A couple vacationing in Hawaii were told they couldn’t kiss in a store, which turned into their being arrested and detained for five months. Courtney Wilson and Taylor Guerrero have now filed a lawsuit against Officer Bobby Harrison and the city of Honolulu.

OPB has a great piece on Marie Equi, “The Lesbian Anarchist Doctor You Never Heard Of.”

All kinds of couples are making out in the new Skrillex and Diplo video for their song “To ?£.”

Another high school is under fire for not allowing a student to wear the “Nobody knows I’m a lesbian” T-shirt. The teen and her mom are suing assistant principal Dan Beukelman and vice principal Greg Leland of Sierra High School in Manteca, Calif.

Carrie Brownstein talked about being outed with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. She was also hilarious on The Late Show.

Evil bisexuals are still a thing on TV.

St. Vincent interviewed Rooney Mara for this month’s Interview magazine. The two discuss The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Carol, among other things.

Here’s Rooney on co-star Cate Blanchett:

Rooney: ...But I remember the first time I saw Cate, in Elizabeth[1998]. I think I was 13. I went to our little local theater with my mom, and I was like, “Oh, my God, who is that woman?” She’s just so incredible. It was pretty easy to pretend to be enamored by her. And she’s quick and witty and funny. She’s very confident. It’s amazing. Usually it’s not that great to meet your idols and work with them; it’s kind of a letdown. This definitely wasn’t. She’s much different than I had in my head, but kind of better, in a way. It was also obviously terrifying.

St. Vincent: What were you scared of?

Rooney: Just working with someone who you think is the best at what you do. It’s terrifying to stand beside them and try to do it with them.

St. Vincent: How did you overcome that?

Rooney: I didn’t try to overcome it, because it works for our dynamic in the movie, so I went with it.

Also at Interview, a chat with director Alexandra-Therese Keining (Kiss Me) about her new LGBT-themed film, Girls Lost.

Out screenwriter/director Maria Maggenti has adapted the novel Before I Fall, which is becoming a film directed by Ry Russo-Young and starring Halston Sage, Logan Miller, and Kian Lawley.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler talk about Sisters, their new film written by out lesbian Paula Pell, in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Kristen Stewart is in talks to join a Lizzie Borden film starring Chloë Sevigny. Kristen would play the live-in maid who witnessed the murders and Chloë will play the lesbian ax murderer.

Padma Lakshmi and Susan Sarandon certainly make a handsome couple.

Swedish artist Nina Linde has created lesbian porn for blind people.

Batgirl‘s Alysia and Jo have made it official in issue #45! More same-sex kissing at the link, too. (Thanks Peter!)
