“Clipped” recap (1.2): Big Hair, Big Dreams

After its premiere last week, Clipped returned to our screens Tuesday. And just in case you forgot what channel it’s on, look, it’s Conan O’Brien!

TBS, you take product placement to a whole new level. But I tip my hat to you for at least making it plausible, because I guess I can see how Boston boy Conan could maybe pop by Buzzy’s.

On with the episode, which is all about giving and dreaming. Like giving up on your dreams. Or giving to charity, like Joy’s trying to do by taking part in an AIDS Walk. Everyone at the shop agrees to pitch in some money for her cause, except Ben. Oh Ben, you should’ve known Charmaine was going to call you out.

Even though we’re only into our second episode, I think it’s safe to say we’ll be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t focus on A.J. and Danni. This week’s storyline: Danni’s giving up on her dreams of making it as a singer and she wants to drag A.J. and his baseball playing dreams along with her.

While A.J.’s whining about it at the bar, Buzzy appropriately interrupts because Charmaine’s about to get cruised. By a dude. Well, can’t blame him.

Charmaine stops man-gazing long enough to give A.J. some solid advice — whether it’s dreaming or cruising, “It’s all about the chase.”

But because A.J. was always going to end up listening to Danni, he decides he’s going to give up on his dreams and leaves the bar to drink his sorrows alone at home. You know it’s bad when you leave a bar to drink.

He jets off just before he can see Danni take the stage. Guess someone didn’t give up on her dreams after all…

Charmaine is so not on Team Danni. The next day at work she sits waiting for Danni to show up. When the perky blonde asks her why she didn’t stick around after her performance, Charmaine responds as sarcastically as ever: “Oh well that’s because due to circumstances beyond our control we didn’t want to be there.”

I love you Charmaine.

Seriously people, come to Charmaine and Charmaine alone for advice. She points out that because of Danni, A.J.’s blowing off his tryout and that’s not what friends do to friends.

Coming to her senses, Danni forces A.J. to show up for the tryout. And even though he didn’t make the team, he and Danni have agreed they won’t be giving up on their dreams.

Credit where credit is due, Danni thanks Charmaine for her sage advice. Moral of the story: listen to Charmaine.

Oh, and that Conan O’Brien makes a great Red-Head Customer.

Check back in with us next week for another episode cut and style.
