“Finding Carter” recap (2.9): Putting on a Show

Way previously on Finding Carter, the twins found out that Lori is actually their bio-mom, which sent Taylor on a bit of a downward spiral. Last week, Madison, Carter’s friend from her old life, showed up to remind Carter how awesome things used to be, and also to tell her that she’s still in touch with Lori. During a Wilson family reconciliation, Carter found out that Lori tried to kill herself.

This week’s episode picks up the morning after Elizabeth’s birthday celebration. David and Elizabeth worry about Carter, and how she’s taking the news of Lori’s attempted suicide. Upstairs, Carter is on the phone with Lori’s doctor. He wants to know if she will come in to meet him, but Carter says no. Taylor hears the end of the convo, and gets huffy that the doctor even considers Carter to be Lori’s family. I mean, Lori is her biological mother and she raised Carter for, like, 13 years. So, maybe slow your roll there, TayTay.

Carter also seems unamused by Taylor’s reaction, so she heads over to Bird’s to talk to Max, because Max is the best. While they’re processing, Madison and Bird come in, pulling a Willow from “Doppelgangland” move, all, “LOL who died? … Oh wait, seriously, who died?” Carter tells them what happened and Madison is really upset, claiming that she thought Lori was doing better.

Madison asks if Carter is going to talk to her or see her, and Carter says no, because she doesn’t want to get sucked into Lori’s drama again. Madison starts to get worked up about it, because she thinks it’s obvious that Lori is mentally ill and needs support. She says that she knows Lori has done terrible things, but she could’ve died and Carter doesn’t even care.

Outside in the car, it looks like Madison’s words perhaps did have an effect on Carter, because she tells Max that she wants to meet the doctor. He disagrees, claiming it’s not her responsibility, but, because he’s the most loyal puppy to ever puppy, he will drive Carter to the doctor.

Back at the house, Gammy has has turned the living room into a high-fashion dressing room in preparation for some charity fundraiser later in the day. Elizabeth forgot that she had committed to helping out, and, when she finds out that Carter has gone to meet Lori’s doctor, tells Taylor that she’s sorry, but she can’t do it. Taylor is, of course, super pissy about it, and she whines until Elizabeth changes her mind. Ugh, Taylor, please stop.

Elizabeth calls David, wondering if maybe he should go after Carter while she prances around in dresses. (I guess? Still unclear what this fundraiser is.) David, however, is pretty busy, because he’s got some rogue demons to hunt, and also he thinks Carter would’ve asked for their help if she wanted it, so he politely declines. He tries to reassure Elizabeth that Carter will come back to them.

In the car, Carter feels a bunch of feelings and experiences a montage of mom/daughter Lori flashbacks. She’s got the stack of letters that Lori sent her (and she never opened). Carter is feeling guilty because she never answered any of the letters, so she wonders if Lori’s attempted suicide is her fault. Max reassures her, because he’s a perfect, beautiful man with the hair of a goddess.

Back at the house, I think Gammy and Taylor talk about some feelings, but I’m not really sure because boobs:

Kyle shows up, smirking about the boob-show and asking Elizabeth out to dinner, because he’s got something he wants to talk to her about. She’s like, “Listen, dude, I’m just dealing with a lot of things today, and my tits are out, and I think maybe my mother is trying to prostitute me out to strangers in the name of charity later? Can I take a raincheck?”

Over at Bird’s house, Madison is kind of freaking out about the way she left things with Carter. Bird’s like, “Don’t sweat it-one time I literally plastered the entire school with thousands of copies of a picture of Carter’s face that she hated, and she totally forgave me!”

Madison also reveals that the reason she even showed up in town in the first place is because Lori asked her to. Bird thought that she got kicked out of her house for being a big old lezzie. Madison’s like, “Why yes, Bird, I do enjoy the touch of a woman, if you must know. But after being kicked out, I called Lori and she sent me here to lure her daughter away.” Bird thinks that’s fucked, and Madison agrees. They also do some eyeball flirting and decide to go to the fundraiser tonight to see Carter and apologize.

Carter and Max arrive at the mental hospital, and Carter has another flashback. She tells Max that she thinks Lori has actually been sick for a while-like, her whole life. Uh, yeah, I mean considering the fact that she stalked Carter’s family and then kidnapped her (twice) … that’s probably true. The doctor comes out and Carter decides that she actually does want to see Lori. Max warns Carter to not let Lori mess with her, and Carter tells him that she won’t, but she has to at least try to help the woman that raised her. They decide to talk to the doctor first and only see Lori if he thinks it’s okay.

After arriving backstage at the fashion show/fundraiser/whatever, Elizabeth takes a look around for approximately 30 seconds before deciding she needs to make some calls and get some booze. I like you, Elizabeth. At around the same time, Bird and Madison show up and continue to flirt. They get a flask of alcohol from Gabe and Damon (who Bird also flirts with), and take in the sights and sounds of rich people.

Some old white biddies are talking trash about Bird’s family, so Madison gets a little bit butch and tells them to mind their own beeswax. Bird thanks her and the two of them bond about adults constantly letting them down. Madison tells Bird that maybe “fate” brought them together. Oh Madison, you are smooth, girl. A+

At the mental hospital, Carter and Max talk to Lori’s doctor. I guess they don’t care about releasing confidential patient info to Lori’s daughter’s friend, huh? The doctor says Lori talks about Carter a lot, and he thinks it would be good for them to see each other. He also tells them that the new medicine they have her on is helping with the chemical imbalance in her brain, but it’s been a rough adjustment.

Lori is sitting in a room, facing away from the door. Her neck is bruised and she won’t look at Carter, telling her that she shouldn’t have come. Carter looks to the doctor who just nods back-who the fuck gave this guy a medical license? Carter tries to talk to her, but Lori’s just like, “You didn’t want to be my pen pal? Well, now you can never talk to me again. Those are the rules.”

Carter tells her that she was worried, and Lori doesn’t know why. Now that she’s on meds, Lori can see for the first time how badly she hurt people- how badly she hurt Carter. Lori wants Carter to leave her alone, move on with her life, and never think about Lori again.

Back at the country club, Gabe spills the beans to Elizabeth about why his dad wanted to get dinner. Kyle is thinking about selling the house and wants to get a place with Elizabeth. That’s… probably not your news to deliver, Gabe. Elizabeth is flustered, and Gabe decides to man-child-splain to a grown woman about things being “complicated.” Someone slap this kid in the face.

Speaking of people I’d like to slap in the face, Taylor stomps over toward Madison and Bird, probably interrupting another deep conversation about fate, or potentially homosexuality. She whines about Carter not coming, telling them that the girl decided to go to Lori’s hospital instead.

The three of them are interrupted by a dude named Chad who wants to kick Bird out on account of the fact that her parents haven’t paid their membership dues. Gammy marches over like the ferocious lioness that she is, and tells Chad that Bird and Madison will be her guests at her table. SUCK ON THAT ONE, CHAD.

Over in Lori’s room, Carter is still trying to get through to her mom, to convince her that she does care. Carter recognizes that, yes, Lori made some mistakes, but she was still her mom and Carter’s entire childhood was not a mistake. She tells Lori that she loves her, but Lori refuses to say she loves her more. As soon as Carter leaves, however, Lori drops the act and excitedly tells a nurse that she knew Carter would come back.

Backstage at the show, David arrives and tells Elizabeth and Taylor (Ha! Elizabeth Taylor!) that Carter saw Lori, and she’s on her way home now. Elizabeth is relieved, but Taylor meows some more about how Lori ruins everything. She wishes death upon her, regardless of the fact that she’s her biological mother. Gammy rolls up, like, “Y’all ready to partay?” I am ready to partay with you, Gammy, but your TV family is maybe not so much. Taylor insists that she doesn’t want to waste more time on Lori, though, and the show must go on!

Kyle shows up and Gabe is immediately like, “Uh, I don’t think Elizabeth wants you here, Dad. Her husband is sitting right over there.” But Kyle is just like, “Listen, sonny, let your dear old dad teach you about women. Their brains are smaller than ours, and I’m not saying it to be mean-that’s just science. So, we don’t wait for them to ask for things or tell us things, we just act. Like men. You got that?” Then that motherfucker brings David, the husband of the woman he is planning to ask to move in with, a beer. Bold. So bold.

And then there’s some fashion and stuff!

In the car, Carter is crying about as much as you’d expect someone to be crying when their kidnapper/biological mom, who recently attempted suicide, told them to fuck off and that they don’t love them anymore. (Spoiler: It’s a lot of crying) Max, that majestic unicorn, pulls over to comfort her. Ugh, I hate it when Kathryn Prescott cries. One second, Carter and Max are huddled close and she’s snotting all over him, the next:

Oh god, and they slept together. Aw man, there’s another thing Taylor is for sure going to freak out about. Carter moves from the lovenest in the bed of the truck back to the cab, and Max follows. They both pretty much immediately regret their hasty decision to have sex, which, obviously. You dummies. Carter beats herself up and Max tries to make her feel better, but she knows she fucked up.

Backstage at the fashion show, Elizabeth tells Taylor that they both have to be there for Carter, no matter how much they hate Lori. She’s part of Carter’s life, and they have to accept that. Taylor says she doesn’t know how to help Carter, and it’s the first time in a while that I’ve liked Taylor again.

Kyle jumps out at Elizabeth as she’s leaving, all, “Surprise! I showed up even though you didn’t ask! Praise me. And then let’s hightail it (he actually says that-not a joke) back to my place and we can do sex-er, I mean talk.” Elizabeth ain’t got time for his shit right now, so she says, “Thanks, but no thanks,” and goes over to David.

Madison and Bird get back home, laughing about their day at the country club. Bird says she’s sorry that Carter didn’t show up, but she still had a really great day. Madison jokingly agrees that it was the best “ladies who lunch date” evar, but she wishes it wasn’t a joke. It would’ve been a perfect actual date, in her opinion. Bird tells her that if it was a real date, they probably would kiss, right? You are correct, Bird. So correct. They kiss and it’s sweet and chaste and adorable.

Max and Carter make it home to the Wilson residence. Max wants to talk about the sex they just had, but Carter just wants to forget it ever happened. Taylor is waiting for Carter when she gets inside, and she gives her a big hug. She tells Carter that she should’ve supported her more today, that she should’ve been there for her sister.

Carter tries to tell her it’s fine, but Taylor insists that she broke the Sister Code. Taylor tells her she’s here if Carter ever wants to talk. Carter’s mouth says that she knows, but her face and heart say that she’s being crushed by guilt and sadness.

Shoutout to those people in the comments last week who totally called Bird/Madison. Birdison. Mird. IDK. Anyway, let me know what you thought of this week’s ep here or over on Twitter @jennalykes.
