When I didn’t spot Mariska Hargitay at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, I assumed she was just sick of winning all the time and needed a break. She was nominated, of course, for best actress in a television drama for her role as Detective Olivia Benson on Law and Order: SVU (aka the hottest, most badass cop on TV.)
But, it turns out she missed the ceremony because of a partially collapsed lung! And, it was the second time it’s happened to her; the first was around Christmas.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition, called pneumothorax, is caused by air leaking into the space between the lungs and chest wall, resulting in pressure pushing against the lung that causes it to collapse, leading to “mild to severe chest pain and shortness of breath. A pneumothorax can be caused by a chest injury, certain medical treatments, lung disease or a break in an air blister on the lung’s surface.”
But don’t worry, it sounds like our girl Mariska will be fine. She’s undergone surgery and will remain in the hospital until Friday for observation. In a statement issued to the Associated Press, Law and Order creator Dick Wolf said, “Mariska is feeling better, we are looking forward to her quick recovery and return to set.”
I’m glad to know that Mariska is OK and that she’s coming back to the show. I don’t really watch it to see Ice-T, if you know what I mean.
