Foreign Affairs: “The Rich Man’s Daughter” brings a lesbian storyline to the Philippines

This week brings us special treat from the Philippines. Today GMA premiered The Rich Man’s Daughter on its primetime block on Channel 7. It also premiered worldwide on GMA Pinoy TV.

The show had a rough patch before we even got to see a single episode, with female lead Marian Rivera pulling out a month before the premiere due to a complicated pregnancy. She was quickly replaced by Rhian Ramos and now, when all is in order after some re-shoots, we’re hoping the lesbian themed show is here to stay. Yes, you read that correctly: “a lesbian-themed drama” is how the show is described.

Ramos is set to play wealthy heiress Jade Tanchingco, whose family is Filipino-Chinese. She’s an only child-a daddy’s girl-and in the pilot, her father is promising millions to a man suitor who can make her fall in love with him. Let’s just say it doesn’t necessarily go his way when Jade indeed falls in love with a woman: Althea Guevarra (portrayed by Glaiza de Castro). Luis Alandy stars as a male love interest, David Limjoco, meaning we have no choice but to wait and hope for the best gay outcome.

This is the first time a lesbian-themed show has aired in the Philippines. Head writer Suzette Severo Doctolero was also on staff of the country’s first gay-themed show: My Husband’s Lover, back in 2013. (Fun fact, in between she was on a show called Carmela. No relation to Carmilla.)

It’s all very new and exciting so more details are scarce, but if you’re in the Philippines, check the show and let us know what you think! If you already watched the premiere, give us your take.
