“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (11.18): #Blessed

In last week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith was tip toeing the line of becoming dark and twisty again, but then Derek came home, professed his love and Meredith realized she wanted him around after all. Now she’s feeling so #blessed, and she knows how annoying that is. But she had to take stock and as she watched her beautiful kids and her husband’s beautiful hairline, and remembered that she was a fucking genius, she couldn’t help but admit to feeling kind of lucky. That doesn’t mean that Maggie doesn’t kind of want to punch her, which Meredith totally gets.

Speaking of blessed, Richard working with a bunch of middle schoolers that day. Except, he doesn’t look so thrilled. He’s more like #OverIt. Derek is back at the hospital and once he settles his affairs (no pun intended) he wants to be back full time. Owen, makes that Golden Retriever face because he’s worried that Derek can tell that he’s messing around with his sister. He tells Derek to ask Amelia if he can come back, since she’s the big bad neuro boss now. Oh, and in addition to being cute as a button, funny and a brilliant surgeon, kids love Amelia. She is killing it with the field trip kids. Derek shows up to crash the party, but surprisingly tells the kids with pride that he works for his sister. “My sister’s my boss.” That’s right, new other Shepherd. Derek promises not to be a dick this time and asks Amelia to give him another chance.

Steph is swiping left on Tinder like it’s her job. She dismisses guy after guy and Jo suggests that perhaps she might need to be a little more open, if she ever wants to you know, get laid. #truth

Jackson is trying really hard to be cool with the field trip kids and introduces himself and Ben as the Plastics Posse. In other news, he’s also trying to make fetch happen. The kids are unimpressed. Elsewhere in the hospital, Steph runs into a one of the field trip chaperones who has somehow lost his kids. You had one job! She offers to help him find them, as she giggles and flutters her eyelids.

April is next up with the kids and as she is explaining traumas, some cop cars screech up to the door and two bloody and banged up officers are wheeled in. Well, you wanted traumatic, you got it, kids. The students are shuffled away, but not before one of the little girls watches as a cop with a serious neck wound is wheeled by. Of course, now the kids are full of questions and everyone is running to try and assist on the cases. Richard suggests that the class go up to the peds ward and see the adorable babies, and tells Steph to take them.

A cop, who actually carried one of his fallen officers in the building, stands around worried about his friends. It’s Kevin Alejandro, that guy who plays a lot of cops (and gay Jesus on True Blood) and he’s bleeding all over the floor, which Callie notices. She takes him aside to examine him and he’s been shot in the leg. There’s a big chunk of muscle missing, and frankly Callie is impressed by his heroic actions on such an injury. His name is Dan Pruitt, and I get the feeling we’ll be seeing more of him in future episodes. The mother of two of the injured cops arrives at the same time as one of the suspects who has been shot multiple times.

The field trip class is busy staring at babies, while Arizona tries to adorably humble brag about how she operated one of them in utero. The kids are booooored. Come back to them when you get a YouTube channel or something, Arizona. Alex takes a little delight in how hard Arizona is bombing with them. Babies are not exciting and what the kids want to know about are the cops who were just brought in.

One of the brother cops, Pete, was shot in the chest. He’s lucid while being comforted by his mother, and he asks if they can throw a big potluck after this is all said and done, with the doctors and everything. He then crashes and the doctors fight to save him.

Amelia decides to give Derek a chance and when she asks him to clip and aneurysm (something he could do with his eyes closed) he hesitates, but then agrees.

Back in the ER, Maggie is working on Pete and they get his heart-rate back but he’s been down for a long time. Fourteen minutes to be exact. Amelia checks his pupils, but the poor guy is brain dead. Owen has to go and deliver the terrible news to his mom. Meanwhile, Bailey and Ben begin work on the suspect and realize right away that he’s really young. They rush him into the OR.

Alex blows away the competition by showing the kids an xray of a guy with a nail stuck in his skull, and another of someone with a coffee can in their abdomen. Steph tells the chaperone that she’s the one who pulled the nail out, and he thinks that’s pretty cool. #HeartEyes Their flirting is cut short when one of the other chaperones comes in to say that the bus has arrived.

Derek is scrubbing in to work on the aneurysm, when Owen walks in expecting Amelia. He’s surprised that Derek is OK with doing such a routine surgery, but Derek is actually pumped to be operating again. He tells Owen they should hang out more, and Owen gets all pale because all he can think is, “I’m schutuping your sister.”

In the OR, Bailey and Ben find that the suspect’s liver is shot to hell and he’ll need a new one. Amelia pops in and is all kinds of judgey, but considering what happened to her father, her reaction is not unexpected. Bailey reminds her that their job is to save lives, regardless of the patient’s backstory. She leaves to call UNOS to see if they have any local livers hanging around, and to see if she can track down the kid’s family.

Callie is still working with Dan, and luckily he doesn’t need surgery, but he will have to stay off his feet for a while. He says that won’t be a problem because he’s probably going to be on desk duty for a while since this was the first time he’d ever fired his weapon in the line of duty. He asks her about the young suspect, because he really needs something good to come out of all of this. Callie assumes that he means that he hopes the kid will die.

Meredith is in an OR with the other brother Brett, and no matter that they do, they can’t figure out why he’s crashing. He too is brain dead. He had a massive stroke during surgery and now that mother has lost both her sons on one day. It’s an unimaginable loss.

UNOS has no available livers, and it turns out the young suspect has been in the foster system for years. He has no family to speak of. Bailey tells Ben to try and keep the kid alive while she searches out another option.

Meredith is not feeling quite so blessed anymore, and Callie overhears that both brothers are dead. She heads off to tell Dan the bad news. Bailey approaches Meredith about her two brain dead officers. One of the brothers is a perfect match for her patient, and Bailey wants Meredith to try and get consent from the mother to allow for a liver transplant. Meredith is not thrilled with the idea and the two doctors bicker over the ethics of it all.

While the chaperone and Steph exchange giggly goodbyes, they find out one of the kids is missing. It’s little Julia, the one who witnessed the cop’s nasty injuries. They set off to search the hospital for her.

Meredith sits down with the brothers’ grieving mother to discuss organ donation with her. She tells Meredith that the men were always helping people, even as little boys, and that’s why they ended up as cops. They’d want their organs to help others. Bailey interrupts Meredith to tell the mother that she can decide where she wants the organs to go. In fact, she could help a child who needs a liver, desperately. When the mother realizes it’s the suspect, she becomes agitated. “He murdered my boys,” she yells at Bailey. There’s no way he’s getting anything from her sons.

Julie’s mother (who was one of the chaperones) reports Julie missing to the cops, and since there are about forty of them at the hospital already, they should have no trouble tracking her down. As Steph and Jo look for her, Steph can’t stop talking about the cute chaperone. Jo says Steph is “hot for teacher.” #Thirsty

Meredith talks to Dan about the fallen cops, as Callie checks on his wound. He again asks about the suspect, but not because he hopes he will die. He knew the kid, and he and his fellow cops tried to steer him in the right direction. He was a good kid that fell in with the wrong people. He feels guilty that they weren’t able to save him, and that his life got so turned around.

Amelia stops by to talk to Meredith about Derek. She want to know if Derek really just wants to work, or if he’s gunning for her job again. Meredith thinks that Derek is different now, and he’s choosing what makes him happy, rather than the things that will make him a medical superstar. Meredith pages Bailey because she thinks they scored her a liver. Meredith and Bailey watch as Dan talks to the brothers’ mother, as he manages to change her mind about the donation.

The young suspect, Jared, will get a new liver and a second chance at life. Meredith removes the viable organs from both brothers and those organs will go on to save so many. A young friend of mine recently passed away from a tragic fall. He was an organ donor and through his death, others have a chance to live. That has brought his friends and family a lot of comfort through the pain of losing such a vibrant, loving person. His name is Adam, and he is dearly missed.

Derek is the one who finds little Julie, who is hiding out in the OR viewing theatre, watching Meredith remove the organs. She tells Derek that she wants to be a doctor someday, and he explains what Meredith is doing. He also tells her that his wife is pretty amazing. Afterwards, Meredith tells Pete and Brett’s mom that the donations will go on to save thirty seven people that day.

Callie wheels Dan out into the parking lot and gives him the doctory spiel. He tells her that if that day wasn’t so awful, that he’d ask her out for dinner. She tells him to come back for a check up in 10 days, and he can ask her out then.

So, let’s talk about this. I know that many Calzona fans are not happy about this. But here’s the deal. Callie is dating. She’s dating people that she is attracted to and interested in. Women and men. This isn’t some grand scheme on the part of the Shonda crew to ruin our shipping lives. Callie is a bisexual woman and she deserves to live her life authentically, and bisexual viewers deserve to have their stories told too. This isn’t out of left field, and it’s been months and many episodes since Callie and Arizona broke up. While I personally feel that the couple will find a way back to each other, this is what is happening now. Arizona, who for the most part, had very little storyline outside of her relationship with Callie, has had a rich and compelling one this season. She, too, will get a new love interest at some point. And you know what? We might really like her. We might even love her.

I have heard that fans feel that Calzona has been shortchanged, has had lesser storylines and whatnot. With a cast the size of Grey’s, it’s tough for everyone to get what feels like a fair share. I don’t feel that there was a conscious effort to do that with Callie and Arizona. There is not a grand conspiracy at play. Remember when Meredith talked about thinking zebras instead of horses? Well, I think fans are so used to expecting zebras to come trampling by, that they don’t recognize a plain old horse when they see one. We have many allies, writing stories and creating characters we love. Sometimes they don’t chose the path we want them to, but that doesn’t mean that they are trying to hurt us. I always encourage people to express themselves to writers and showrunners. Sometimes it makes a real, significant difference. But when we start simply demanding things, or berating them for not giving us what we want, all the time, what makes us think that people will want to go to bat for us? I know you will have much to say in the comments about this, and I truly do want to know your thoughts on this.

OK, back to Grey Sloan. Steph finds the cute teacher and asks him out. He’s totally geeked, except that he’s not a teacher. He’s a high school junior. Oops. Steph drowns her humiliation in copious shots, while Jo laughs her ass off at her friend’s embarrassment.

April finds Jackson carefully stitching up Brett and Pete so they can look better when there mother comes to collect their bodies. He knows that this is something Mark Sloan would have done and man, he misses his friend and mentor. The Plastic’s Posse means so much to him, because he wants to be able to pass on his knowledge, just like Mark did for him.

At the MerDer mansion, Amelia and Derek finally get a chance to catch up. He checks in on her, knowing that she had to witness the deaths of two men who died in a similar way to their father. She in turn, tells Derek that she’s happy for him and so glad that he;s no longer running away from his feelings. Apparently, Derek saw their mother and she gave him some #straightalk and told him to fix his shit. He hated being away from his family, and now he wants to be a really involved father and husband. Saving lives, is enough now. Amelia admits to her relationship with Owen and her fears that it will fuck her up. Derek smiles and tells here that love just kind of does that to everyone.
