Tonight on TLC’s Style By Jury, a woman named Brandy nominates her partner, Samantha, for a makeover by fashion experts Louise Roe and Preston Konrad. In the clip below, it seems like a panel of non-fashion experts (read: random people) are being polled for their opinions on Sam’s look, which causes them to misgender Sam and say they would “cross to the other side of the street” if they saw her.
The whole thing is really transphobic, homophobic and misogynistic, and it’s made even sadder when Sam reveals she was jumped by a group of guys in the recent past. “It makes me feel horrible,” Sam says, and that is probably an understatement. When she watches this, she’ll likely feel just as bad.
Sam says she usually shops in the men’s department, but she does like Ellen’s style and would be open to freshening up her look without losing herself. It makes me nervous to see the kind of people who are in charge of this “makeover,” especially with the kinds of jury they have commenting on Sam’s appearance, but hopefully Sam and her partner did not have an awful time on the show, and are happy with the results.
