Ali Adler’s “Supergirl” wows with new costume design, killer cast

If we weren’t already excited about the new Supergirl television show in the works starring Glee‘s Melissa Benoist, then the reveal of Supergirl’s costume has officially won us over. The new costume (designed by Colleen Atwood) is surprisingly subdued, yet undeniably Super. No boob windows or thigh slits to be seen. In other words, Kara Zor-El (Supergirl’s real name) can actually kick some serious ass, just like her male superhero contemporaries.

Seeing Supergirl treated with the same respect as the current influx of male superheroes gives us hope that the show will have a more feminist bent, and perhaps be a game changer when it comes to superheroine representation.

Headed up by out executive producer Ali Adler, Supergirl has been killing it in the casting department with Nashville actress and Broadway superstar Laura Benanti as Kara’s mom, Grey’s alum Chyler Leigh as her sister, Calista Flockhart as Kara’s glass ceiling busting boss, and even the original Supergirl, Helen Slater in a guest-starring role. While the show has kept much under wraps, we are crossing our fingers for a queer character or storyline.
