“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (11.12): Dirty Girl

Rise and shine, Seattle docs. It’s time to grab a cup of coffee, take a shower, see your roommate’s boobs. Well, at least that is Arizona’s morning. Jo calls dibs on the working shower and drops trou right in front of her.

That morning, Meredith swoops into the hospital, dragging her suitcase behind her. She runs into Maggie who tells her the kids are fine, and eyes her suspiciously. She asks Mer how her weekend was, knowing full well that something is up. Meredith keeps mum about it, even when Callie joins in. Callie, who is completely obsessed with other people having sex.

Once again, Callie can’t seem to stop fixating on one night stands. As Owen tells her how Dr. Herman took over the OR board with fetal surgeries, Callie laments how she used to be great at hooking up, but now, not so much. She’s tired of sitting around in her pajamas, and binge watching Grey’s Anatomy, so she asks his advice as to how to impress the ladies and gents. He tells her to be honest, that’s impressive enough. They also notice that the lounge sofa is missing.

Arizona is late for Dr. Herman’s latest CAT scan, and she rushes in all disheveled-like. She tells Amelia about Jo commandeering the bathroom, and Dr. Herman hears through the mic. She gives Arizona some hell about living with a resident while she should be uber focused. Then she softens and gets a giggle out of teasing a very embarrassed Arizona about the silliness of the situation.

Catherine Avery and Richard Webber appear to be back on, as evidenced by the smooching and spending of the weekend together. She tells Richard how wonderful it might be if she stuck around and assisted on some surgeries with him that day. Some couples play tennis. Some couples share surgeries. Catherine mentions Jackson, and Richard reminds her that her son has asked for space.

In the nearby woods, Ben and his brother Curt, say goodbye to their recently passed father by spreading his ashes. Bailey acts as look out since it’s technically illegal. They reminisce about their father, who was a stern dude by all accounts. Something Ben says strikes a nerve in Curt and he suggests they get going. After racing Ben to the top of the hill, Curt gets dizzy and passes out, tumbling all the way to the bottom.

They rush him into the emergency room. Meredith examines Curt, who shows some sensitivity in his abdomen and is rather evasive about Meredith and Ben’s medical questioning. He orders his brother out, and Bailey is surprised at his anger since Curt is usually so kind. Meredith tells her that she’s got everything handled.

Next in the ER is a young woman named Hillary, who fell down a flight of concrete stairs after her boyfriend proposed to her. Her boyfriend goes on to tell Callie and Jo about the proposal, and how poetic and romantic it was. Hillary starts to wake up, but when the boyfriend promises in tender whispers, never to leave her side, she faints again.

Owen confronts Dr. Herman about taking over the OR board but she’s not looking for a fight. In fact, she’s lounging. On the missing Attending Room couch. She goes on to explain how terrific the couch is. It’s so comfy, and roomy, and would he like to…test it out? Owen is utterly confused and makes that face, you know where he looks like a Golden Retriever who just heard a loud noise but can’t tell where it came from. This amuses Dr. Herman to no end.

Meredith checks on Curt and confronts him as to why his liver enzymes are extremely high. She also tells him that she ran some extra tests and his estrogen levels are that of a young woman. Meredith knows what’s going on, but she needs to know what Curt has been taking so she can help him properly.

Hillary, the fainting girlfriend, is awake but needs surgery to fix a bleed in her brain. She also needs ortho surgery on her knee. According to her boyfriend Todd, she’s fainted a few times in his presence. Hillary admits that she’s been faking the fainting spells in order to shut Todd up. She can’t deal with all his professions of love and lesbian levels of processing. She didn’t know how to reject his proposal, so she faked fainting and ended up in the hospital.

Meredith returns to Curt to let him know that they will have to remove his spleen, but it’s one of those lower tier organs and he can live without it. Ben, upset about Curt’s labs, asks his brother if he’s been doing drugs. Curt promises that he’s never done drugs. Outside the room, Ben’s mind is racing and Bailey tells him to think like a doctor would. However, Ben is too upset to see what he might have noticed on a patient other than his own brother. When he leaves, Bailey approaches Meredith. She also knows what this is all pointing to. Curt has been taking non-prescribed female hormones and starting the transition process. Meredith won’t confirm, and instead tells Bailey to ask Curt directly.

Speaking of asking direct questions, Maggie confronts Meredith about that weekend. While Meredith was supposed to be with Derek in DC, Derek was calling to speak to Meredith back in Seattle. Maggie had to lie to cover for her sister, something she hates doing. They are interrupted by Bailey calling out, as Curt vomits blood.

Arizona is trying to talk to Alex about the fact that Jo walks around naked all the time, when Dr. Herman walks into the conversation. Alex tells Dr. Herman that the resident/attending policies were established because of Arizona and Leah. Dr. Herman grins at this development. Arizona tries to get the conversation back on track.

Arizona: Both of you stop, OK? Alex, it’s inappropriate. She’s a resident, I’m her superior, I’m a girl who likes girls… It just puts us both in a very awkward position. You should respect that.

Alex: I’m kind of down for whatever happens.

Jo: (arrives) Hey!

Alex: You need to start putting pants around the house coz Robbins keeps checking out your ass.

Arizona: No. No no no no. You don’t need to put…pants on. Your ass..it..fine.

When Arizona runs off, totally embarrassed, Dr. Herman tells Alex, “This is the best day!”

Back in Hillary’s room, she feels terrible about how she’s handled Todd. He’s just so clingy and sensitive that she has been chickening out when things get serious. He’s so “nice” that she feels guilty for not loving him. That day in the park, she had to fake it all the way, even as she tumbled down the stairs.

Owen finds Amelia to discuss his concerns about Dr. Herman’s behavior. You know, couch stealing and Owen flirting. Amelia doesn’t really think it’s much cause for concern, and tries to suss out how Owen feels about hooking up with co-workers.

Catherine and Richard work on a patient in the OR and Catherine calls in for an unnecessary Plastics consult with Jackson, just to check up on him. Jackson is not too happy about his mother’s request, and neither is Richard, who feels used.

Now that Curt needs surgery for a stomach bleed, Ben gets increasingly upset. Maybe it is drugs afterall, he tells Bailey. Bailey warns him not to jump to conclusions. When he presses, she tells him to talk to Curt. He knows that she’s keeping something from him, but she doesn’t want to be the person to share Curt’s very personal journey. Eventually she takes Ben aside and tells him that Curt is transitioning, calmly explaining that she is transgender and will be living life as her true self soon. While it’s never OK to out someone, in her heart Bailey was attempting to diffuse the situation. This is something that Ben simply cannot wrap his head around.

Not one to let something go, Maggie keeps on Meredith about her weekend. All this while working on Curt in the OR. Maggie explains the excuses she used to cover for Meredith. Meanwhile, Bailey finds Ben to give him an update on Curt’s condition. Ben is trying to think of excuses as to why Curt would be saying she is trans, including the trauma of their father’s death, or an emotional breakdown. Bailey stops him right there, telling him that Curt’s news is a good thing, and it’s important that Ben show support for Curt right now.

As Arizona goes through their schedule for the day, Dr. Herman calls her out for being a hypocrite for judging her affair with Graham. “Which resident did you sully?” she asks Arizona. Ha! All of a sudden, Dr. Herman finds Arizona so much more interesting. Arizona admits to the liaison with Leah, and how she cheated on Callie prior to that relationship. Dr. Herman loves hearing about this juicy piece of Arizona’s past. “You’re dirty,” she tells Arizona with a smirk. “You’re a dirty, dirty girl.” Arizona laughs at the statement, and the fanfiction just writes itself.

In the OR with Hillary, Callie and Amelia talk about Hillary’s boyfriend. Amelia gets why someone would rather fall down the stairs than accept a proposal from him, but Callie sees it differently. She sees someone who is devoted and loving. Amelia says that’s all well and good but if that devotion makes someone else want to pretend to pass out, then it’s a problem. Something about this rings true with Callie. “Well that’s why I can’t pick people up anymore, because I don’t know how to put them down.” Her game is off. Amelia confesses her game is gone now too. Back in the day, she could seduce someone with just a flick of her eyes. Drugs gave her a false confidence, and now that she’s sober, it’s all words and insecurities and awkward moments.

Mama Avery and Jackson actually talk a little about what’s going on at home. April is angry and sad, and Jackson feels useless to bring her out of that pain. Catherine tells him to give her the “illusion of space” and find something to occupy herself. Richard then understands that he was just an outlet for Catherine’s own sadness.

After Hillary’s surgery, Maggie can’t take it anymore and demands to know where Meredith was. Meredith shuts down when pounced on, and tells Maggie that if she feels she’s entitled to answers because she watched Mer’s kids then she’s got another thing coming.

Hillary has made it safely out of surgery, but when Todd comes in she tenses up. He once again professes his love and she defaults to her “fainting” spell, rather than dump the guy. So Callie does it for her.

When Curt comes out of surgery, Ben can’t stop himself from questioning her about everything, and not in a loving way. Curt tells him that she’s known since she was five years old. Ben feels betrayed that Curt kept this from him for all these years. He storms out and Curt asks Bailey when she can GTFO of Grey Sloan Memorial.

Richard walks Catherine out, and admits that he feels used by her. She reminds him of the speech he gave her during their break up where he accused her of using everyone. Catherine is who Catherine is. Nothing is going to change that. If Richard wants back in her life in a meaningful way, then he’ll need to accept that.

Meredith finally decides to come clean to Maggie about that weekend. She made it to the airport but couldn’t bring herself to get on the plane. She spent the weekend alone in a hotel by the airport. Maggie feels terrible about it, and assumes that Meredith was miserable and embarrassed being alone. Meredith doesn’t correct her.

When Bailey finds Ben, she’s furious at him for rejecting Curt. He explains that he shared every detail of his life with Curt, and he’s upset that Curt didn’t feel she could do the same. Bailey tells her husband that Curt needs him now, but Ben isn’t having it. Not one to lie down without a fight, Bailey steps up to help Curt. She brings Jackson by to consult, who asks what name Curt would like to be referred to from now on. Rosalind. Jackson promises to help her transition safely.

Arizona and Dr. Herman lie together on the stolen couch and Arizona explains that she used to be a lot more free spirited. Now she feels alone, and has no friends outside of her relationship with Callie. It’s isolating. Dr. Herman tells Arizona that she used to spend all of her time trying to impress her former partner, and everyone else. Her illness has freed her in many ways. She suggests that Arizona try shrugging off these ties that bind her too. Arizona tells Dr. Herman go home and rest, but Dr. H stole that couch for a reason. She’s not leaving the hospital until the bitter (or hopefully not bitter) end. Arizona volunteers to stay with her, and Dr. Herman teases that there will be no couch scissoring. This unlikely friendship has really brought out the best in both these women.

Amelia decides to take a plunge of her own, and shows up at Owen’s trailer, all awkward and adorable. Instead of wine, she brings a bottle of water because she’s sober. She gets all freaked out and walks away, but Owen follows her and they exchange a kiss. Amelia, rather pleased with herself, walks away with a huge smile on her face.

At the same time, Callie is loading up on liquid courage and catches a gent’s eye at the bar. When he doesn’t approach her after she flashes him a smile, she says fuck it, and asks him to dance. He says yes, because how could you not?

Meredith goes over to Alex’s to tell him everything. She wanted to see Derek and was so worried that he wouldn’t be happy to see her, that she chickened out. When she got into the room, she felt light as air and amazing. Some Meredith time did her good. She even jumped in her undies on the bed. God knows, sometimes we need a moment to find ourselves again.

She tells Alex, “I don’t want to leave him, but I definitely do not want to be with him right now.” Oh Meredith, we feel you, girl.
