“Jane the Virgin” recap (1.14): The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

About five years ago, Jane had her future all planned out. A five year plan that included having a college degree, a job, and being married but without children. Rafael, on the other hand, was the polar opposite of Jane. Rafael had no life plans. While at dinner with Rafael and Luisa, Emilio demanded that Rafael get a job or he’d cut him off. Jane’s family is extremely proud of her, while Rafael’s father was extremely disappointed with him.

Five years later, we’re in the present time where Jane and Rafael are trying to register for baby items online. Michael interrupts to talk to Rafael about Sin Rostro. He breaks the news to Rafael that Rose is Sin Rostro. Michael explains about the underground plastic surgery ring, which they have reason to believe that Rose used to alter her own face. Jane views the interaction between Michael and Rafael as a telenovela where the two men slap each other over and carry on dramatic interactions.

Michael asks where Luisa is. Rafael tells Michael she’s in the mental hospital for claiming to have a relationship with Rose. Rafael realizes that Luisa is in danger and he needs to get her out of there.

Jane walks in on Rafael having a secret phone conversation. He ends the call and when she asks what it’s about, he claims it’s about getting Luisa out of the hospital.

Petra walks in wearing a fierce white dress and looking powerful. She tells Rafael she fired the manager and has other changes she wants to make now that she’s part owner. First on her list is to strip the Solano name from the hotel and make Rafael a silent partner, ridding him of his duties.

Jane goes to Rafael’s penthouse suite but finds him leaving from the room across from his penthouse. She overhears Rafael telling someone not to leave the room and to get some rest. Jane knows Rafael is hiding something from her. She can’t help but knock on the door to see who Rafael is hiding in that room. She gets a huge surprise when she sees Roman Zazo.

Michael sees her shortly after and notices she’s scared. Unable to lie to Michael, Jane tells him that she just saw Roman Zazo. They go up to the room and Roman tells them that he’s actually Aaron Zazo, Roman’s twin brother. Rafael invites the both of them in. Rafael hired a private investigator to find Aaron after Roman died. Aaron was at an orphanage in Mexico volunteering but had gotten kidnapped by the cartel.

Rafael is upset that Jane told Michael. She explains that after the phone call she walked in on that she thought it might be his dad that he was hiding. Rafael seems even more upset that Jane doesn’t trust him, so he goes off to release his sister from the mental hospital.

Luisa devises a plan to escape from the mental hospital using her mute roommate for assistance. Everything goes according to plan, but the moment Luisa steps a foot out the door she sees Rafael.

They are both shocked to see each other. Rafael explains he got power of attorney and was there to release her. She makes light of the matter and tells him she knows a shortcut of getting back inside. They go back the same way she escaped.

Rafael tries to help Luisa place her bags into the trunk of the car. “We’re all responsible for our own baggage.” She says they all learned that at the mental hospital. Rafael breaks the news to Luisa that Rose is Sin Rostro. He finally believes Luisa and says how sorry he is for not believing her before.

Jane’s BFF at work, Lina, is planning a baby shower for her. Jane isn’t sure she even wants a baby shower since they can’t decide on whether or not they should have two of everything or one of everything. Lina gives Jane an info sheet to fill out about her and Rafael for the party games. Jane realizes she and Rafael don’t know very much about each other at all.

Luisa gets her own suite in the hotel. She is looking through a box when she finds a letter from Rose. In the letter, Rose explains that she’s sorry Luisa was hurt. There is so much she wants to say but can’t, except for one thing: Your father is where lightening first struck, where there were fireworks. It might sound confusing, but it definitely struck a chord with Luisa.

Jane goes to Rafael’s suite to apologize for going behind his back. She explains about the baby shower game and how they don’t know much about each other. But they’ve only known each other for a short amount of time and that trust takes time to build. They are interrupted by a phone call.

Luisa is sitting outside in a small pool with Rose’s letter in hand. Rafael, Jane, and Michael are there. Rafael asks Luisa why she’s sitting there. Luisa shows Rafael the letter and tells him to read the last line about their father. Luisa explains that she and Rose made love for the first time in a pool. She’s certain that “right now, I’m sitting on dad.”

The next day Jane and Rafael are sitting together in his suite. He gets a phone call that they have his father’s body. He tells her that he needs to be prepared because he knows that Petra is going try and take over the hotel.

Luisa meets with Michael to talk about Rose. He asks Luisa to tell him everything, from the beginning. She’s excited to explain to him “the greatest love story of all time.” It all began when Rose walked into the same bar as Luisa, wearing a tight red dress. Rose offers to buy Luisa a drink, but explains she’s sober.

After the bar, they head to the pool where it’s just the two of them. Rose says she “never expected this to happen.” “You never know when lighting is going to strike,” Luisa responds. And then there were fireworks. Literally. There were fireworks because it was the fourth of July. Then, they made love. Michael asks, “And then what happened?” They made love, again. “And then what happened?” he asks, again. They made love, again. Typical first lesbian date of multiple love making sessions. Right? Right.

The next day Luisa was having dinner with Rafael and Emilio, which is the same flashback from the beginning of the episode. Things weren’t going well because Emilio was upset with Rafael for not having his life together. In walks Rose. Luisa is excited to see her, but her excitement quickly fades when she realizes Rose is her father’s girlfriend. Rose explains to Luisa that she needed to be with a woman one last time. Luisa claims that she has a girlfriend anyway, named Allison. The same Allison whom she marries and later divorces in the beginning of the season.

Back in her suite, Luisa turns to the mini bar to ease her pain. Rafael had the bar emptied ahead of time. She gets phone call from Rose where she asks how Luisa is doing. Luisa is enraged since Rose is the one that put her in a mental institution and killed her father. According to Rose, this plan has been in the works for years, before they met. Rose says that what they had, the past five years, was real. “You once said you want to run away with me. Do you still?” The viewers are only shown a silhouette of Rose on the phone. But, we can see that her hair is short and blonde now. Will she come back as someone else?

The next day is the funeral. Rafael finds Luisa and tells her how sorry he is for not believing her. Now that Emilio is gone, they each own a third of the hotel and Petra owns the other third. Rafael asks Luisa to sign over her share to him so that he has more power of Petra. Luisa is upset because he only apologized to ask for her share, and that it’s always about money with him. “Money is the root of evil,” says Luisa.

Back at Jane’s house, Rogelio tells Xiomara that his publicist advised him to take the job in Mexico. But, the silver lining is that Rogelio has been offered to take a role in Miami to play the second lead in the telenovela of his fiercest rival, Esteban. Rogelio wants Xiomara to tell him to stay. She tells him, “Whatever makes you happy.” She wants him to say, “You, Xiomara,” in reference to what makes him happy. But they’re like school kids, too afraid to tell each other how they really feel.

Jane decides she has had enough of Rogelio and Xiomara being childish. She gets them both in the same room. A funeral makes you realize how short life is, she begins. So, she demands that the two of them explain to each other how they would feel if Rogelio were to take the job in Mexico. Rogelio struggles to get out that he had really strong feelings for Xiomara. Xiomara says she feels the same way. Rogelio proclaims that he’ll take the job in Miami. Xiomara and Rogelio kiss, making Jane feel awkward.

Later that day Xiomara decides to break her vow of chastity because Rogelio chose to stay in Miami for her. At first Rogelio questions why Xiomara would want to break her vow without committing to each other traditionally. But then he realizes he’s being stupid and goes along with it.

Petra calls a board meeting hours after Emilio’s funeral. Rafael tells Petra that Luisa is signing over her share to him. Luisa interrupts and says she won’t be signing over her share to Rafael but to Petra instead. This came about because Petra overheard Rafael asking Luisa to sign over her share. Petra put on her acting face and made nice with Luisa, saying that she too has a Shaman. She proceeded to make herself sound enlightened, and as though she cared about Luisa.

Rafael demands Luisa to not sign over her share to Petra. Luisa says she isn’t signing over her share, but giving Petra her voting rights. Luisa leaves because she needs time with her Shaman and to get away from the craziness. Petra proclaims that now she is the face of the Marbella.

Petra enters the elevator, feeling on top of the world, when she sees a familiar face. Roman Zazo. Well, who she thinks is Roman Zazo but, of course, it’s Aaron Zazo. He says his brother has told him so much about her, and he looks forward to getting to know her.

Michael goes to see Rafael to find out about Luisa whereabouts. The police were monitoring Luisa’s phone after they found out about the letter from Rose. They found out Luisa got a phone call the day before from an encoded number, and received a text message from the same number before she left the hotel. Nadine checks Luisa’s suite and her stuff is gone.

Drained, Rafael heads back to his suite to find Jane and a candle lit dinner of takeout Chinese food. Rafael cries as he tells Jane about how Emilio said he was a huge disappoint. He was sad he wasn’t able to change before his father died.

The next morning Jane awakes to find Rafael smiling at her. He filled out the info sheet for the baby shower game. He said filling out the sheet made him think about their registry. Since they love each other and their baby, they should just move in together. Jane’s face doesn’t look too happy about the idea.
