“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (11.10): The Little Gun

No one on Grey’s Anatomy is getting any damn sleep! This is of course, for various reasons. Meredith can’t sleep because she is person-less and Derek is in DC, Jo and Alex can’t sleep because they are busy boning, Arizona can’t sleep because Jo and Alex are noisy boners (also she sleeps in lingerie alone?), and April and Jackson are nervous wrecks waiting to hear about their baby.

Meredith is so lonely without Cristina and Derek that she practically jumps on Karev when she sees him at the hospital. He didn’t return her text from that morning, and he tells her it was because of the boning. Meredith explains that she and Cristina had a special “pause” button that they’d hit whenever the other needed them, even during sex. Derek and Owen understood, get with the program Karev. She offers him in on her complicated surgery, but since it’s not PEDS, he blows her off. She manages to sweet talk Bailey into it though.

Jo and Meredith meet up with the patient Adrianne, who is having surgery to remove an aggressive tumor. Adrianne and her husband are bookworms and totally adorable about their meet cute at his bookstore. They ask Meredith to swear on their copy of Homer’s The Odyssey, since it’s basically their bible and what brought them together. So of course they do.

Arizona is working with April and Jackson to determine what type of osteogenesis imperfecta their baby has. A couple types are manageable, but one is fatal. When they ask about Dr. Herman’s whereabouts, Arizona tells them that she’s the big gun of the operations, while Arizona is the little gun. Right now all they need is Arizona Robbins: Little Gun MD.

Amelia tries to consult with Dr. Herman after her morning’s MRI, but Dr. Herman is condescending as usual. She calls Amelia “adorable” when she tries to explain how she’s approaching her tumor. Amelia is undeterred: “By the time I’m done with your tumor, I’m going to be able to tell you what street this bastard grew up on, and where it lost its virginity.” Dr. Herman was right: You are adorable. Dr. Herman isn’t sure if Amelia is confident or delusional.

Jackson wants to discuss their options if the news is bad, but April doesn’t want to think about it. She pushes him back and he admits that he would want to terminate the pregnancy if the baby is Type 2. Not surprisingly, this is not what April wants to hear, as she is staunchly pro-life and wants to have the baby no matter what.

As Bailey and Meredith work on Adrianne’s tumor in the OR, they find that it has progressed way beyond their scans and they are flying blind. Rather than try to work in what is essentially the complete dark, they close her up until they know how to proceed, and decide to consult with Maggie. Meredith declares the tumor a “monster.” Meredith, Bailey and now Maggie have to deliver the bad news to Adrianne’s husband Michael. He’s scared, but Bailey whips out her Homer knowledge and uses it to soothe him.

Owen and Callie meet with a tech rep who is trying to sell them some new transducers. She calls their robotic limb project, “sexy as hell,” so she’s either flirting with one of them or a super inappropriate salesperson. She’s pretty, which does not go unnoticed by either Callie or Owen. When she leaves, Callie totally encourages Owen to go for it but Owen thinks she’s reading “the vibes” all wrong.

Arizona and Dr. Herman meet up, and Arizona gives Dr. H the low down on Jackson and April’s case. Since the results won’t be in for 24 hours, Dr. Herman unveils her new plan for Arizona. She’s gathered the most difficult fetal surgery cases in the country and is bringing them to Seattle. It’s Arizona’s crash course and both doctors couldn’t be more excited. It’s the first time I think we’ve ever seen Dr. Herman smile.

Meanwhile, Amelia is trying to explain to the residents the very complicated procedures she plans perform on Dr. Herman. She is her natural, frenetic self and no one can follow her. Amelia tells them to look at the big picture, but they are all still at a loss.

Maggie, Meredith and Bailey are looking at new scans of Adrianne’s tumor, but it’s all just a big ol’ mess. In honor of Odysseus, Bailey renames the tumor Cyclops. Meredith laments not being able to hold the tumor in her hands, which sparks an idea: To the 3D printer! This new dream team decides to print the tumor so they can actually see what they are dealing with. In ten hours, they will have their Cyclops.

Jackson and April are still at an impasse about what to do in the worst case scenario. April’s mom shows up after a call from April. She wants to take April out of the hospital for the day, and Jackson thinks that’s a great idea. Mama Kepner’s suggestion to spend the day praying in church however, was not exactly what he was thinking of.

Meredith stops by to check on Adrianne and Michael is there, not wanting to go home alone. He can’t even read or concentrate, and it feels like his love is so far away even though she’s right there beside him. Meredith understands how that feels.

Arizona and Dr. Herman go through endless case files, and Dr. Herman decides who can be saved and who cannot. Arizona wonders aloud how Dr. Herman can handle all this sadness. For Dr. Herman, it’s not about what is sad and what isn’t. It’s about saving who they can, and learning how to figure that out.

While winding down at Joe’s bar, Owen and Callie spy the sexy tech rep sitting alone. Callie encourages Owen to go for it, but he’s feeling shy so she takes matters into her own hands. Callie walks over to the tech and strikes up a conversation about Owen and what a great guy he is. The tech doesn’t disagree, but it was Callie that she was flirting with that afternoon. The tech wastes no time in propositioning the utterly befuddled Callie. The tech tells her she’s gorgeous, which causes Callie to giggle nervously and protest that she’s not. (Wrong answer, Callie!) The tech asks if Callie is into women and she says totally, but she’s recently divorced (sad face) and not ready to dive into the lady (or fellow) pond right now. The tech tells Callie that a one night stand is always on the table if she changes her mind. Callie rushes back to the table, grabs her coat and heads home alone. Sara Ramirez nails this scene with such a beautiful combination of giddiness and crushing insecurity.

Amelia stops in to see Arizona and Dr. Herman, who are working on their charts. Dr. Herman points out that some of the cards indicate “babies that will die if it turns out that you’re full of crap, and can’t take out my tumor.” No pressure at all.

Back at the Kepner-Avery house, things are hella tense. Jackson and Mama Kepner get into a roil about the baby and God’s plan. Both of them are adamant in their convictions, but April just wants them to shut the hell up. She’s devastated, freaking out, and none of this is helping. There is nothing worse than feeling alone while surrounded by people.

Amelia joins Meredith, Bailey, and Maggie while they wait for the tumor to print. This is one of those classic, underrated Shonda scenes, where the women of Grey’s just simply sit and have some real, heartfelt conversation. They all talk about their various sleeping situations. Meredith struggles with sleeping alone. Without Derek or Cristina, the bed feels so utterly empty. Bailey complains about how furnacey and snorey Ben is. Amelia misses having someone in her bed too, just knowing someone is there. Maggie finally shares some of her back story. She can’t sleep with anyone else in the bed. Her former boyfriend used to love to cuddle, and she suggested that they have separate beds. Needless to say, it didn’t work out. Meredith considers printing a 3D Derek, you know, for sleeping (and stuff).

Once Cyclops prints, the docs pull all their resources and a few residents to come up with a plan to defeat it. Even Alex joins in.

Even with the white board of instructions, the docs struggle to see what they are actually working on. As Alex and Stephanie watch from the theatre, something Alex says about the big picture makes sense to Steph and she runs off.

Amelia sits bleary eyed starring at Dr. Herman’s scans. She’s beginning to doubt herself, so Richard gives her a pep talk. He clarifies that the residents looked at her like she was talking gibberish because it’s simply too much over their heads. She believes in her plan, so that’s all that matters. With that, Stephanie marches in and declares she gets it. Guess who is joining Amelia on that surgery.

As the docs struggle to help Adrianne, they run out of ideas. Jo brings the model over and holds it above where the actual tumor is. Meredith and Maggie figure out how to tackle it finally and they pull out the nasty looking, real life Cyclops. It’s really gross so I will spare you the picture.

Callie finds Owen and laments her reluctance to take the tech up on her offer of a no-strings attached one night stand:”The last woman I kissed in that bar, I ended up marrying.” Owen gets it, though. He’s not feeling it either. Before Cristina, no problem, but he’s different now. Callie wonders if maybe they have used up all the “happy” that life has granted them. No way, Callie lady. You will be happy again.

Alex and Jo are mid sexy times when she gets a text and yells, “Pause!” Meredith taught her that, of course. She answers a text from Stephanie and rejoins the sexytimes. Alex, you know better than to try to resist the women of Grey’s and their bonding.

Speaking of bonding, when Meredith can’t sleep, she Facetimes her sister, Maggie. They chat like friends, which is a hell of a big step. She might have found someone to lean on, and vice versa. Meredith, Cyclops the 3D model, and Maggie chat into the night.

The time has come for Jackson and April to receive their results, and things are not ok. Arizona lets them know that Dr. Herman is on the way in, which means the Big Guns have been called out. She can barely conceal her sadness for the couple, and Jackson literally braces himself for the news.
