“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “Jane The Virgin” score wins at the People’s Choice Awards

The People’s Choice Awards are one of the only major award’s show where fans actually nominate and choose the winners, as opposed to critic/member-based shows like the Emmys and Golden Globes. On one hand, it is an excellent indicator of what is popular among the TV, film, and music audiences, and allow those shows and performers to get their due. Plus they include more categories, giving love to sci-fi, crime dramas, new shows and even dramedies. On the other, it can lead to some very…interesting wins. (I’m looking at you, Adam Sandler.) Some of our favorite shows and actresses got some serious love at last night’s award’s ceremony. Pretty Little Liars took home an award for Favorite Cable TV Drama, beating shows like Sons of Anarchy, True Detective and Bates Motel. You go, Liars. It also trounced the subtextastic Rizzoli and Isles. Sorry, Rizzles fans.

Grey’s Anatomy really swept up, proving the decade old medical drama is still a major hit with fans. It picked up a win for Favorite Network Drama, while Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey scored acting awards. Sandra Oh‘s character Cristina Yang was honored as TV Character We Miss Most. Co-star Jessica Capshaw tweeted some love for Grey’s fans after the announcement.

Orange is the New Black took home the award for Favorite Dramedy, a title which suits the show quite nicely. Newbie Jane the Virgin has proved to be a hit with critics and audiences alike, and garnered a win for Favorite New TV Comedy. Here’s star Gina Rodriguez, hoisting her award.

It should come as no surprise that Ellen Degeneres is still America’s favorite lesbian. (Not an actual category.) She won Favorite Daytime TV Host. Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi were the belles of the ball, and we even dedicated a whole post to their cuteness. Here’s Ellen with another winner from the evening, Betty White. Somebody frame this.

Jennifer Lawrence took home both the Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Action Movie Actress awards. Will her reign of awkward perfection ever cease? Melissa McCarthy won Favorite Comedic Actress in a Movie, proving once again that she is taking over Hollywood, one film at a time.

Two out gay men, White Collar‘s Matt Bomer and Glee‘s Chris Colfer, scored wins for Favorite Cable TV Actor and Favorite Comedic TV Actor, respectively. This speaks volumes about how openly LGBTQ actors and actresses are being embraced by the public, and frankly, I could cry tears of joy about it. Viola Davis was also recognized for her fantastic work in How to Get Away with Murder.

While Faking It may have lost to Melissa and Joey (I’m baffled too), star Rita Volk took the loss like a champ.

Overall, the People’s Choice Awards was a lighthearted affair, and is really meant to recognize the viewing public, as much as the people and shows nominated.

Did you vote for the People’s Choice Awards? Who do you think deserved a nomination?
