“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (11.8): Stop stealing my orgasms

On this week’s Grey’s, Maggie, Derek and Owen are arguing about what course of treatment to give Holly, a patient whose root canal has turned into a life threatening necrotizing abscess. Derek of course wants to go in first, but Maggie is concerned that the patient’s heart is the number one priority. She calls in Meredith for a consult, and she agrees with Maggie, something Derek is not pleased with. They all meet with Holly to explain what she needs, but Maggie and Derek are still at odds. Owen determines that they should run a CT scan to see what needs to be done first. (Has anyone noticed that Derek’s hair keeps getting bigger and bigger?)

In “things that aren’t totally awkward” news, Stephanie is sent in to do an ultrasound on April. Yup. Steph is interested in fetal surgery now, and has been assigned to do more ultrasounds and whatnot. April agrees but tells Steph not to tell her the sex, because she and Jackson want it to be a surprise. Steph (accidentally?) slips and calls the baby a “he” anyway. “Rookie mistake,” she claims. Jackson comes in and she and April pretend that having your husband’s ex-girlfriend who he unceremoniously dumped in front of the entire hospital is totes normal. When April casually mentions that the baby is sitting the same way as in the last ultrasound, it sets off alarm bells for Stephanie. April cuts the test short, however, since she’s pissed about the sex reveal.

Callie is working with two VETS, Rick and Jordan, who are practicing with the sensors that will go into their new legs. There’s some competition between the men, and Callie playfully encourages it. Owen tries to put the kibosh on it though, not wanting Callie to push the men. “That’s the thing about soldiers: I don’t have to push them. They come wired that way,” she tells Owen.

Dr. Herman leads Arizona and Graham on rounds, as she digs into a pint of breakfast ice cream. (What? It’s a thing.) She doesn’t give a damn anymore about her figure or what people think, and she’s going to enjoy all the Banana Clambake she can before the tumor takes over. She winks at Arizona knowingly. Arizona is stressing that Dr. Herman isn’t in the right condition to be working with patients, but Herman assures her that she’s still in control, at least for the time being. She promises to let Arizona know when that begins to change. She finally lets Arizona in on her personal life, which is to say that she’s divorced with no kids, and married to her job. Arizona can’t stop pushing though about the tumor, and Herman tells her to back off and pulls her off the day’s surgery.

A woman sent by the President, Deborah Corazon, waits in the lobby for the passing Derek. She’s the special assistant to the Prez, and the Prez isn’t pleased that Derek resigned from the White House job. He wants another meeting, and Derek can’t help but smirk happily, at least for a moment. That all goes away when he joins Maggie and Meredith in the CT Scan room.

In Callie and Owen’s lab, it’s time for Jordan to try the leg and go for a little walk. He does well, and Rick teases him the whole time. Jordan tells Callie that he’s got it, and she steps back. Jordan decides to push himself, ends up slipping and smashing his head open. Amelia rushes in to help, and suspects there may be a brain bleed, so she and Owen wheel Jordan out to surgery. Owen manages to blame Callie, naturally, insisting that she stay put. Rick is heartbroken, worrying that he too pushed Jordan too hard.

Jo is in a glaring kind of mood. You can’t blame her. Her boyfriend is being monopolized by his new “person” and is living with a heartbroken lesbian. It’s hard to get one-on-one time now. Stephanie has more pressing issues however, and shows Jo April’s ultrasound scans. Maggie joins Alex and Meredith at their cafeteria table, and Mer assures Maggie that she agreed with her about Holly because she believes Maggie is right. Callie joins the party, by slamming her things down. She tells them that Owen blames her for Jordan’s accident, Arizona blames her for their break up, and life is generally shit. Meredith and Maggie get a page that their CT scans are in, so they head out. Richard stares at Maggie as she leaves, which does not go unnoticed by Bailey. Richard feels that the ball is in Maggie’s court now, but Bailey isn’t quite sure she agrees, between sips of her disgusting kale smoothie. Derek stops by the table to ask Richard for a consult, you know, the one Meredith already gave him.

Amelia scrubs in to get to work on Jordan, who needs extensive surgery to repair his brain bleed. She stops Owen to offer him an explanation of sorts for the whole debacle the week before. She admits she had a problem with Oxy and it was pretty bad, but she’s been clean and sober for two years. Owen was willing to take Derek’s word for it, but Amelia wanted him to hear it right from the source.

Maggie and Meredith are distressed by what they see on Holly’s scans, and want to open up her up right away to get to the infection. Richard pops in, and agrees that the infection looks bad, but thinks they should wait for Derek. Maggie and Mer are not happy that a second opinion was requested for their second opinion.

Arizona, who can’t stop obsessing about Dr. Herman’s tumor, places a call to Dr. Herman’s doctors under the guise that she is Amelia’s fellow. She asks the other hospital to send all of Herman’s records over. Uh oh, Arizona, you are on thin ice here. In Arizona’s defense, she’s terrified to make the call.

Derek does eventually sit down with Deborah, who tells him that she was instructed to return with a yes answer. Derek sticks to his guns, even though it’s slowly killing him and his marriage and tells her (and the Prez) no, once again.

Arizona attempts to intercept the messenger with Dr. Herman’s files, but Amelia already has them in hand and is on to Arizona. Amelia takes a look at the charts and the tumor is indeed a doozy. Arizona asks about the sort of symptoms Dr. Herman might show so she can be on the lookout. Arizona lies to Amelia and tells her that Dr. Herman, and others know that she has these files, but to keep it on the DL.

Meredith and Maggie approach Holly and her mother with news that the infection in her chest takes priority, so they plan to take her into surgery. Before they can, her airway closes and they need to intubate. Also not doing well is Jordan, who is still in a coma. Owen school Callie on how soldiers approach risk, and that by encouraging them to push themselves, she has no idea how far they may indeed push. He once again lays the blame on her. (Owen was in the room, by the way, and could have stepped in, but didn’t.)

Arizona goes looking for Dr. Herman and finds her banging Graham in the on call room. Arizona is grossed out for all of us.

Derek and Richard walk in while Maggie and Meredith are working on Holly. Derek fears that the steroids used to treat the inflammation may have ruptured her abscess. Richard agrees with Derek, and Derek takes over the case. All four argue about rank pulling, and Maggie makes the call to take her to remove the infection in the chest.

When Arizona runs into Graham again, she orders him to stop fooling around with Dr. Herman. When she accuses Graham of taking advantage of Dr. Herman, he points out that she is his superior. He does however suggest that Arizona give is a shot too, since Herman is open to “new ideas.” Arizona dismisses him as Stephanie comes to ask for guidance. When Arizona looks at the scans of the ultrasound, she agrees that it is not good. Stephanie admits that it’s April and Jackson’s baby, and Arizona tells her not to say anything until Dr. Herman looks at it first.

When Callie sits down with Jordan’s best friend Rick, she has to give him the news that Jordan may not bounce back from this. He’s angry and feels guilty, especially since Jordan was the one to pull Rick out of his rut when he got to rehab. Rick refuses to use the leg until Jordan wakes up.

Arizona finds Callie crying, and approaches her to make sure she’s OK. Arizona asks if for just a few minutes, they can pretend that everything is alright, and Callie agrees.

Arizona: I feel like everything is going wrong, and I have no idea what to do about it. Callie: I feel, like every single thing I’m doing is wrong. You will figure it out. You will. Arizona: You will, too. Callie: Thanks. Arizona: Do you miss me, at all? Callie: Of course. Arizona: Just…not enough.
And with that, Arizona walks away. Ugh, you two. This hurts.

Richard and Derek watch from the operatory theatre as Maggie and Meredith work on Holly. He admits to Richard that he’s given Meredith plenty of reasons to think that he’s working against her, but in this case, he isn’t.

Arizona brings Stephanie into see Dr. Herman, but Herman quickly rushes Steph out. She confronts Arizona about talking to Graham, but Arizona claims she was just worried about her. “Robbins, I don’t know how many orgasms I have left in life, but it may be fewer than flavors of ice cream, so I can’t spare any. Stop stealing my orgasms.” Arizona tries to express that it’s in her nature to be concerned, and Herman once again tells her to butt out. She didn’t screw Graham because the tumor made her do it. She screwed him because she’s dying and orgasms are fun.

Meredith calls Alex over to give her a dose of the truth. Does he think that Meredith is using the patient to win one over on Derek? Alex asks if it had been another surgeon, would she have made the same call?

Richard tells Bailey how he’s managed to get even further up on Maggie’s shit list. This time he’s blaming Derek though. Bailey is busy getting her fitness on, by walking up and down the stairs, so Richard joins her so he can continue talking. Bailey is over it, and tells Richard to remember that he’s a good guy, and to stop falling all over himself to make it up to Maggie.

Amelia calls in Callie and Owen to let them know that Jordan’s made it through a big hurdle, but there’s no telling what the future holds. Callie heads off to contact his family, but Owen stays behind to make sure Amelia has a support system for her own issues. She’s touched, and assures him that she does. She asks the same of him. Aaaaaaand the sparks begin to fly. Callie stops Owen as he leaves to tell him that she wants to step away from the VET program for a while. He refuses to accept her resignation, and gets all drill sergeanty on her. It works.

Meredith, Maggie and Derek all check in on Holly. Thankfully, her neuro check goes well, and Maggie and Meredith were right in their decision. Derek’s not exactly happy to acknowledge that, though.

When Stephanie and Arizona finally show Dr. Herman the scans of April’s baby, she confirms their fear. The child is likely suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes brittle bones and is usually fatal. They all feel terrible, and while Arizona wants to do something for the baby, Dr. Herman says all she can really do is be there for the parents.

The next time Stephanie sees April, April runs after her to let her know that she forgives her for spilling the beans about the baby’s sex. Stephanie pulls April in for a hug, and apologizes. Just not for what April thinks she’s apologizing for.

Maggie confronts Richard about why he sided with Derek, instead of her and Meredith. He explains that he used a formula to evaluate risk, and that’s why he decided to go with Derek. She asks to see his formula, but it’s in his old noggin. She asks if he’d go over the steps with her some time, and he’s delighted.

Outside, Alex is busy fielding texts from Meredith, which is increasingly pissing Jo off. Alex explains that the house has always had an open door, and while he’s there, it will remain that way. Jo softens when she sees how much it means to him.

Callie and Owen work together to help Rick walk successfully on his new leg. Elsewhere, Arizona walks into an out-of-the-way xray room to find Amelia pouring over Dr. Herman’s scans. Arizona starts pulling them down, freaking out about Herman seeing them. Amelia tells her to shut up and listen. She may be able to remove the tumor.

As Edwards pulls Dr. Herman aside once more to discuss any options for April and Jackson’s baby, Jackson steps off the elevator and overhears them. He confronts a very dismayed Stephanie.

Meredith and Derek bicker about Zola’s coat, which is just a way for them to enter into a much bigger fight about their relationship. Meredith doesn’t think that Derek trusts her, but it boils down to resentment. Derek doesn’t feel like Meredith has his back, plain and simple. “I gave up everything for you,” he yells before storming out. She chases after him, and they continue their fight through the hospital halls. Derek thinks that Meredith sees him as a tyrant, trying to keep everyone down. When she says that he should have gone to DC, he stops and asks her if that’s what she wants him to do. Meredith tells him that he should, so he whips out his phone and calls Deborah. Derek has called her bluff, and she tells him to leave. Meredith flashes back to memories of her childhood, of her early days with Derek, of Richard’s regrets with Ellis, and of course, Cristina telling her that Derek isn’t the sun.
