I miss Buffy.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book. It’s smart, funny and has a lot of the same sensibilities as the TV show. But one crucial element simply cannot be captured on paper: the flesh-and-blood goodness of Sarah Michelle Gellar.
This is how dorky cute Gellar is. InStyle recently asked her, among others, to answer the question, “What’s sexy now?” I love her answer: “Sexy is what you make of it. A library is sexy if you’re in the right frame of mind.” Oh, to be a book in that library.
I’m always happy to hear of new SMG projects because I just know one of these days she’ll get a part in which she can prove herself to be the kick-butt actress we know she is. Or at least one that calls for her to be scantily clad. Oh, please. You were thinking the same thing. So, in the spirit of dewy-eyed optimism, here are Gellar’s upcoming films, in order of scheduled release date.
1. Southland Tales
After Southland Tales got abysmal reviews at Cannes last year, Kelly obtained funding to punch up the special effects and rework the movie, now scheduled for a Nov. 9 release. Cinematical describes the film as a mix of sci-fi, comedy, music and drama. That sounds Buffyesque, doesn’t it? And check out this cast — SMG joins Mandy Moore, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Miranda Richardson, Seann William Scott, John Larroquette and Cheri Oteri. Interesting mix. Add the Donnie Darko factor and we have a winner. I hope.
No trailer yet, but look for it any day now. Meanwhile, take a look at this funny (and NSFW) clip of Gellar as adult film star Krysta Now. Looks like Southland might at least meet the scantily clad criterion. It also could be a breakout role for SMG.
2. The Air I Breathe
Alas, the reviews were not kind. Variety called it “morosely pretentious.” Cinemattraction said, “it’s a vacuous waste of an hour and a half.” Yikes. The House Next Door at least praised the performances, so maybe the film will be retooled before its U.K. release in December. They did change the poster, but, IMO, not for the better. What do you think?
3. Suburban Girl
I know, the thought of Alec Baldwin and Sarah Michelle Gellar doing the nasty is kind of icky, but apparently, it works. The film’s reviews, while not dazzling, found the movie pleasant enough and predicted box office success.
We’ll never know if they were right, since Suburban Girl’s distributors have decided to take it directly to DVD for release next January. You don’t have to wait, however, to see how cute SMG looks in glasses.
The movie-formerly-known-as-Addicted falls squarely in the remade Asian horror movie genre that Gellar frequents. The plot has promise, though — Gellar plays a woman whose husband and his semi-sinister brother have a serious car accident that puts both in comas. The brother-in-law wakes up claiming that he was the one married to her — and he knows things only her husband could know. The trailer is sufficiently creepy to make me want to see more.
Possession will be released in February 2008.
I’m sure I’ll see Southland Tales, but the others sort of leave me lukewarm. What about you? Is SMG cuteness enough to make you see a movie? Which of these sound like the best fit for her? And what book would you be on Sarah Michelle’s shelf?
