“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (11:6): Time Out

Previously on Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda and her crew surgically removed our still beating hearts by breaking up our beloved Calzona. Then they sent in Charlie Brown and his pumpkin to try and ease the pain. It didn’t work.

This week, things are back to normal at Sloan Grey Memorial. April is super pregs, and running the ER like a boss. A female carjacking victim is brought in. We find out her name is Melissa, and she’s been badly beaten. However, Melissa, seems much more concerned that her car has been taken than any physical damage she’s sustained.

At the nurses’ station, Maggie and Meredith smile cautiously at each other through gritted teeth, as Maggie explains that she’s done looking at Ellis’s journals. Derek overhears, and since he can’t fix the country or as many brains as he’d like nowadays, he decides to try and fix Mer and Maggie. A dinner party sounds like a grand idea, no? Also dealing with family drama are April and Jackson. Jackson has just picked up April’s mom from the airport. April’s blood pressure rises because for some reason, her loving mother drives her bonkers.

Having even less fun is Arizona who is sleeping in the damn hospital now. She and Callie talk while Arizona attempts to freshen up for her day of awful with Dr. Hermann. Callie insists that she didn’t kick Arizona out of the house, but Arizona can’t bear the thought of living in a house that was once filled with love, and is now one of uncertainty and heartache. Neither Callie nor Arizona has told anyone about their breakup, and Arizona asks if they can keep it that way for a little bit longer. She just can’t handle explaining it to people, and frankly, girl is a mess right now.

Over in blissfully happyland are Ben and Bailey, sharing a little donut love. It’s not a euphemism, they are actually sharing a donut while Ben complains that Bailey doesn’t take care of herself the way she should. He’s on her service that day, which is so cute. They check in on their patient, Jeremy, a businessman suffering from belly and chest pains. Turns out, Jeremy is a workaholic, and lives on a steady diet of energy drinks and highly acidic and fatty foods. He insists it’s just good ol’ heartburn, but Bailey wants to run some tests.

The carjacking victim Melissa’s co-workers arrive to check on their friend. They are the ones that found her, lying outside of the store. Inside the ER room, Melissa starts to falter due to her massive internal bleeding. Owen performs a laparotomy right then and there, and a freaking geyser of blood shoots out of her abdomen. Callie did try to give us a heads up. When they take her into surgery, Callie notices that she has a military tattoo. Melissa is a war vet.

April begrudgingly visits with her mother, who is 100% Kepner. Red-haired and all smiles, she is ready to get down to baby business. She wants April to take the day off and go nursery shopping, but April is all like, “Maaaaa, you know I’m an important doctor and stuff, and thusly can’t go shopping with you now, or ever.” Jackson offers to step in and go with Mama Kepner.

Jeremy’s labs are terrible; he has high cholesterol, high blood pressure, the works. Bailey wants to do a Barium test on him (delicious) but when Ben suggests the alternative is sticking a tube down his throat and up his ass, Jeremy actually chooses the latter. It’s faster.

Arizona’s rotten day continues as she and Dr. Herman go over the steps on an upcoming fetal surgery on a little guy named Waldo. Herman makes sure to throw a little diss in anytime Arizona starts to feel confident in her answers. Herman tells her to go to her consult and report back for more harassment, er, tutelage.

Maggie and Derek are working together looking at scans and whatnot, when he invites her to dinner. Maggie surprisingly accepts. When Richard comes in, and Maggie shoots the hell out, Derek decides that he should invite Richard to dinner too.

Arizona is late coming back from her consult, and when she meets up with Herman, the doc is chillier than ever. Instead of studying together, Herman tells Arizona to go it alone using her notes. Herman is taking a personal day, and up and leaves Arizona with a big book full of scribbles.

As Ben and Bailey perform the procedure, they come across a large tumor on Jeremy’s esophagus. Over the years, his acid reflux has bred a perfect environment for cancer of the esophagus. They tell Jeremy and his wife that they will remove the damaged area and replace with a section of colon.

When April arrives home, the nursery is nearly all set up. Inside, April finds her old crib, which has been passed down for generations in the Kepner family. Instead of thinking of this as a sentimental and sweet moment, April goes full on petulant, yelling that she doesn’t want her mother’s help.

Not surprisingly, when Meredith finds out that Derek invited both Richard and Maggie to dinner, she’s pretty steamed. They get ready for bed, as Derek preaches about family. Meredith accuses him of being passive aggressive. She feels like Derek is playing her but he insists he’s just trying to help. Sure. Anyway, he wants Meredith to have a family in Seattle if she can. He jokes that it would be helpful to have help from Maggie with Zola’s hair, since Bailey won’t show him any more braiding techniques. Meredith relents, but informs Derek that if Richard is coming to dinner, he has to be the one to tell Maggie.

Arizona stops by PEDS to check on one of Herman’s patients and to seek a little solace in a familiar place. She hopes to find a little sympathy with Alex regarding Dr. Herman, but he simply tells her to suck it up and lay off his turf. She walks off, looking like her heart and ego are being held together with butterfly bandages.

Bailey, freaked out by what she’s seem Jeremy do to his body, decides to start exercising. Of course she runs into Maggie on the track, who suggests they run together. Bailey’s not quite there, so they part ways and Bailey kind of jog/walks away.

At the hospital, April and Jackson argue about mothers. April brings up the challenges Jackson has with his mother, but it’s not the same. “My mother is a nightmare, and yours is the sweetest person I’ve ever met.” Jackson also admits that he welcomes the help. He doesn’t know squat about preparing for a baby, and Mama Kepner isn’t trying to be controlling. She just wants to lend a hand. He thinks their child will be lucky to be loved by a grandmother like that.

Callie and Jo got to check on Melissa after the police stop by. They found her car, and it was completely destroyed. Melissa tells Jo she was sleeping when the carjackers broke the window and dragged her out. She lost all of her possessions in the robbery. Jo vividly remembers living in her car while in high school. She tells Callie and Owen of her suspicion and points out that you can have a job and still be homeless.

Dr. Herman shows up for surgery on little Waldo, and Alex joins the party to observe. They cut into the amniotic sac, and there’s Waldo! They gently pull out his tiny arm to attach some wires. Arizona is doing very well, but Herman freaks out on her for not remembering her notes verbatim. Alex steps in and tells Herman to back off. Something isn’t quite right with Dr. Herman.

After Maggie finds out that Richard will also be at the dinner, she tries to back out, but Derek won’t let her. Meredith and Richard also try to back out, but Derek has heard enough. He’s making pot roast, y’all.

When Melissa wakes up, Owen, Callie and Jo confront her about living in her car. Melissa explains that when she got back from Iraq, her job fell through, as did her relationship with her fiancĂ©. She couldn’t afford rent, so living in her car was only a temporary thing until she got back on her feet. All of her money was in her car however, so now she’s back at square one. Owen reminds her that there are programs to help vets like her, but she doesn’t want to admit that she’s homeless. Some of her co-workers show up with balloons, and she asks Owen not to tell them about her situation.

After her workout that morning, Bailey has pulled a hammie. She limps around, which does not go unnoticed by Ben and Maggie. Maggie outs Bailey’s new exercise routine to Ben. Can Maggie ever not spill someone’s secret?

April sees her mom sitting outside of the ER, waiting to talk to her. Mama Kepner pushed back her flight so she and April could actually talk. Mama K rightfully asks for an apology from her daughter. April balks at first, but she knows she’s in the wrong. Her mother tells her how proud she is of her, both in work and marriage. She has no idea what April does, but that’s OK-she just wants to help. It’s a grandma thing. April does apologize, and promises to call with any new mommy questions.

When Arizona finds Alex, she thanks him for having her back., which makes her feel comfortable enough to tell him about her split with Callie. Arizona thinks that this fellowship very well may have been the final straw in her marriage, and she desperately needs it to work out. Alex is pretty sure that Herman’s got it in for Arizona, so she would have nothing to lose by confronting her at this point.

Owen decides the best way to get Melissa to listen to him is to pull rank, and it totally works. Melissa feels like accepting help would be taking it away from soldiers who really need it. Owen tells he that she gave what she had to offer, and so did he. They may not have seen combat, but they performed a vital service to their country. He suggests that if she wants to give back, that she volunteer at the VA. But in the meanwhile, take the help that’s out there.

Maggie joins Bailey in Jeremy’s surgery, and Ben simply can’t get over the fact that Bailey was jogging. Maggie gives Bailey a little pep talk about how running is the worst, but if you keep at it, you might learn to love it. Unfortunately, this happy exchange is short-lived as Jeremy crashes on the OR table. His heart simply couldn’t handle it.

When Alex stops by to pick Jo up and head home, all the anxieties of her years living hand to mouth bubble to the surface. Alex’s home is just that. His. She worried that one day, it will all fall away and she will be left with nothing, like she was as a kid.

“When this changes, I don’t have any place to be.” He assures her that he’s not going anywhere, and they head home together.

Not only is Derek a genius of a surgeon, with epic hair, but he also the bomb chef apparently. He and Meredith bicker as they set up the dinner party, and Meredith asks for a time out. She’s exhausted from all the back and forth, and so is he. The solution? Shower sex.

April, finds Jackson in their cute little nursery, and apologizes for being a jerk. She’s impressed that Jackson built their rocking chair, and sits down to finally relax in their new baby’s space.

At home, snug in their bed, Bailey starts to worry that she’s dying. Well, not officially dying, but one day sooner than she imagined if she keeps up her unhealthy habits. All day long she tells people to take care of themselves and eat right, but she’s not following her own advice. She ran her labs and they aren’t awesome, so she’s making some serious changes to her life so she can live a long life with Ben and Tuck.

While the McDreamys are reverse cowgirling in the shower, Richard and Maggie both show up for dinner. Talk about awkward. When Maggie tries to leave, Richard blurts out an apology that he wasn’t the father he could have been to her. Maggie doesn’t care about that since she is loved deeply by her family back in Boston. She’s pissed because Richard withheld the truth from her, and now she feels betrayed and foolish. Richard claims he didn’t know how to handle it, but that excuse is wearing thin with Maggie, so she leaves. Derek rushes to answer the door, but it’s too late to catch Maggie.

Arizona decides to confront Dr. Herman about the way she treats her, but Dr. Herman doesn’t have time to hear Arizona’s grievances. In fact, she only has about six months before she succumbs to an inoperable brain tumor. The reason she was so upset with Arizona about learning her procedures in and out, is because it will be her legacy. Herman offers to cram a year’s worth of fellowship into six months if Arizona is up for it, and promises not to tell the board. Arizona needs to mull it over, which means, of course she will. Herman cautions her to hurry, because they are already running out of time.
