Last January, Lifetime premiered Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, their film about the infamous young woman who allegedly murdered her parents. Christina Ricci played the title role and Clea DuVall starred as Lizzie’s sister, Emma. Today Lifetime has announced the actresses will reprise their roles in a series, Lizzie Borden: The Fall River Chronicles.
In a press release, Lifetime says the series “delivers an intense and fictionalized account of actual events and people surrounding Lizzie’s life after her controversial acquittal of the horrific double murder of her father and stepmother in 1892, when the exonerated figure lives a life awash in newfound celebrity.” One reason we will care about this? Lizzie was rumored to have had a relationship with her female friend, actress Nance O’Neil. No word on if Andria Wilson will return for the role, or if the character will even be included in the series. The original film hinted at their flirtation, and hopefully the show will be able to expand on that with their six one-hour installments in 2015.
“For more than a century, the world has been captivated by the legend of Lizzie Borden. But no one has captured her enigmatic menace as well as Christina Ricci,” said Vice President and General Manager of Lifetime Rob Sharenow. “This series will take viewers further down Lizzie Borden’s dark path, revealing what many people suspected about her mysterious life.”
Christina will also be executive producing the series alongside Judith Vern, who also worked on the movie. The writers behind Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret join House of Lies scribe Barbara Nance, Mad Men‘s Jason Grote and Grimm’s David Simkins in writing the scripts, with Stephan Kay (Sons of Anarchy) set to direct the first two episodes.
We’ll keep you posted on further developments on this project because we’re definitely going to be watching.
