“Sisterhood of Hip Hop” recap (1.4): Who’s the boss?

Lucky us-we’re still at the awkward hookah party we ended at last week! Diamond and Nyemiah are having the same fight over “dusty dancers” and Siya takes Diamond into the bathroom to “try and calm her down.” Siya tells the camera she hates when females in the game pull some shit like this: Hating on each other. Bia and Brianna are trying to calm Nyemiah down, supporting her and her performance from the other night.

“I’m trying so hard not to get up and wile out on Diamond,” Nyemiah says, “But I have to remember I’m better than that.” She also has to remember she’s the one who threw shade at Diamond the first time she met her, acting like she didn’t know who she was or that she was with Crime Mob. They both have short term memories.

Nyemiah thanks Diamond for her opinion and is legit cool about it. Diamond then invites them all to a party at a mansion, including Nyemiah. Oh lawd, this should be good. And by good, I mean terrible.

The next day, Bia, Brianna and Siya have lunch and talk about how Siya saved the day. Bia’s like “You put on the cape, Siya!” Siya is the peacemaker of all the Sisters.

Brianna and her momager are going into meet with Atlantic Records, and Kiki (momager) is putting the pressure on her to know “what’s at stake.” She wants Brianna to be “a boss,” but Kiki is being B-O-S-S-Y. They have different ideas about Brianna’s career and its pacing.

Bia is shooting a new video, and she explains that while she’s working with a team (including Pharell), she needs a record deal for larger distribution. Bia is so sweet and chill when she’s not rapping, then she gets to doing her thing and she goes so hard. She’s truly got a rap persona.

During her shoot, Bia’s younger sister, Trini, calls. She’s got bad news: She’s been suspended from school. “It’s not my fault but it’s just all about fighting. All these girls are fighting and drama,” she explains. Bia doesn’t want Trini to do what she was doing at 13: “Smoking weed, hanging out with boys, skipping school.” Bia is stressed because she has work to do but feels like she has to go to Boston and help her sister get it together.

It’s time for Brianna’s big meeting with Atlantic. Or should I say, Kiki’s big meeting. Momager is trying to take over and says exactly what Brianna doesn’t want her to say: “Let’s take it slow.” In comes Ethan Benjamin, a stylist who they want to work with Brianna. And then Momager hates all of Ethan’s looks. (“Isn’t metallic kind of dated?”) Brianna is pissed, and so am I.

Across town, Siya is, too, pissed. She’s trying to figure out her management issues, like Kael trying to get Siya to sign a management contract with him. Renaye comes in with their pup and talks with Siya about Kael. She doesn’t like that Kael expects money from Siya. “What has he done for you to make that 20 percent?” she asks. Siya admits Tank is the only one that has done anything for her, like give her a home and provide for her. Renaye gives Siya the real talk she needs, and they have the most productive conversation they’ve had on this show thusfar. Then the dog poops on the floor and Renaye says that’s how he feels about the contract.

Brianna and Kiki are having some real talk of their own after the meeting is over. Brianna is not happy how her momager handled Ethan. “You was rude!” Also, again, Brianna doesn’t want to go slow! Brianna feels disrespected and that her mom has made it all about her, telling her to be the boss but then telling her she needs to stop thinking she’s the boss. Brianna and I are both confused about the boss situation at hand.

Siya calls Tank to talk through some of their issues. She’s ready to do shows and Tank admits movement is slow. He tells her, again, she needs a team. Siya tears up as she says everyone around her has teams and things going on. “I feel like I’m not doing nothin!” she said. Tank wants her to keep her head up: “This is what you signed up for Siya.” He has been there himself.

Bia has a photo shoot and is thinking about her sister the whole time. She thinks she needs to put the fear of God in Trini, in person. She calls her manager, who says he has a lot of things planned for her so it’s not ideal timing. (Can her manager give some of these opportunities to Siya or what?) Bia promises she’ll just go up to Boston for a few days.

Siya is in the studio and she’s bringing it. She says it’s thanks to Tank that she’s in there, working on music.

Then Kael stops by. He says he cares about her career and needs some legal shit signed to continue working for her. He says he left his girl and his kid for two months to work with Siya for free. Siya’s like “Who the hell is talking about money!?” because there’s no money being made. Then Kael says he thinks it’s all Renaye, that Siya is influenced by her. Siya is like, “Um, this isn’t about Renaye.” Kael keeps bringing up his kid and I’m like, no. Siya agrees with me: “That’s wack as hell!”

Bia is in Boston, telling Trini she’s missing money to be there with her, dealing with her bullshit. Trini says she’s dropping the troublesome friends, and Bia says yes please. “Let go of those friends, let go of those people who is hanging on to you, because the best friend you’ll ever have is me!” Trini says she gets it.

Renaye comes to meet Siya by the water where they talk about Kael. Siya lets her girlfriend know that there’s all kinds of feeling some type of way going on. “You’re a grown ass woman, you make your own decision,” Renaye says. She supports Siya, and is happy Kael isn’t signing a contract. Siya says she’ll never mix business and friendship again.

Brianna and Bia are real cute friends, so cute Bia calls Brianna “BP.” Brianna (aka BP) tells Bia about her momager problems, and Bia is just like, “Ummmmm can you find a new manager?” Brianna is like “That’d be dope.” But she’s scared! And that’s OK, she’s young. But Bia encourages her to do what she feels is right, and to move on it now.

At home, Brianna confronts Kiki. She says the managing is putting a strain on their mother/daughter relationship. Kiki thinks Brianna is being “nitpicky” but Brianna says she’s being real. She wants to handle her own business: “As of right now, love you to death but you’re fired.”

I’m glad that Siya came to a resolution about her management situation on this episode, and that Renaye was there to help be a sounding board. Also props to Bia for being a great older sister and Brianna for standing up to her mom. I’m hoping Nyemiah and Diamond can squash their beef soon so that this really can be a sisterhood, as they’re all so talented in their own ways that helping each other and working together is so much better than the alternative. I’m loving getting to know these ladies.
