“The Bridge” recap (2.6): Harvest of Souls

There was a reason beyond sentimentality that Jack Dobbs wanted to keep his brother’s drawings. Put together, they are clues that lead Jack to a water tower in a deserted area. Jack has brought along a shovel and it’s pretty clear that he’s not searching for buried treasure. He digs around for a while until he finds what he’s looking for: a skeleton. He reaches down and touches the boney remains, and a finger breaks off in his hand.

Sonya, Marco and Abelardo Pintado sit together at a diner, mulling over the previous evening’s near miss. Pintado has hired private security to watch his back, now that there is a very large target on it. Sonya asks Marco why he was missing the night before and he makes up an excuse that one of his children needed him. Pintado thinks that now with Eva’s affidavit that they can make a move to arrest Capitan Robles. Marco asks for a heads up so, you know, he doesn’t get assassinated.

Sonya rushes back to meet with Jack, who is all sweaty and dirty. Kind of like how you get when you’ve been digging up a skeleton in the desert. He simply tells her that he’s been on a hike. (A murder hike.) Sonya is out of sorts, pacing and staring at Jim’s ashes. Jack suggests that they just toss his brother’s ashes in the trash. Sonya recounts the uncomfortable events of her sister’s funeral, and admits she doesn’t know why she took the ashes. They promptly walk outside and thrown the ashes in the nearest dumpster. Sonya then hands Jack a key to her apartment. (What has it been? A week? That’s like lesbian fast.) He tells her that he’s thinking of sticking around town to see how things go with the two of them. Sonya is quick to clarify that she is not his girlfriend, and he suggests they continue to keep it casual by living together.

Frye and Adriana make their way to a church where the priest has summoned them. The padre knows someone who wants to tell his story, and happens to know of Frye. They are handed black hoods to wear for their protection, or at least that is what the priest tells them. Soon they are joined by the hitman Franco who killed Raul, and Adriana knows him right away by the smell of his cigar smoke. He goes on to say that he’s killed many, but according to him, he was a decent kind of hitman, as hitmen go. He let people have one last moment of peace near the end. He’s also been a really busy hitman. Two hundred and fifty three people have fallen at his hands, and now he wants to confess to Frye and Adriana. Adriana asks Franco if he killed Chuchito for Galvan, but he says no.

When Sonya returns to the station, there is a surprise waiting for her. It’s Chip Diaz, the real estate agent who isn’t dead after all. He’s been picked up for DUI and solicitation, and while being booked, saw a flyer with Eleanor’s image on it and speaks up about it.

Sonya and Lt. Wade hop in the car together and Wade takes the opportunity to try and talk to his protégée about Jim Dobb’s death. She’s not interested in talking about it however. He’s less than thrilled to find out that Jack is sticking around and living in Sonya’s apartment to boot. They show up at the same house that Eleanor and Yovanni visited. The same house that has been deeded to Charlotte and Ray. Inside they find a lot less blood, but Fausto Galvan’s scorpion symbol in marble on the floor. They give a quick search but nothing seems out of the ordinary, Sonya tries to put the pieces together regarding Eleanor’s stops along the way, but nothing is pinging yet. As they leave, Cesar sees them and places a call to notify Galvan that cops have been by the house.

While walking through the streets of Juarez, Pintado’s bodyguard bolts, leaving him alone and unprotected. He’s then grabbed by a couple Juarez cops and shoved into a van. He screams for help but no one comes to his aid.

As Eva works in the garden of Rev Bob’s ranch, she hears screaming coming from the barn. She follows the sound and at first does not recognize the man tied to the chair. After she looks into his eyes though, it clicks that she is one of the men who assaulted her. She runs to find Linder and confronts him. Linder isn’t convinced that Eva’s confession will actually put the men that hurt her away, so he’s been implementing his own kind of justice. He’s also gotten all of the names of the men who were at the party that night. Eva is angry that Linder kept him a secret from her.

Frye and Adriana show up at the CLIO offices to meet with Cerisola and are told to sit and wait. Like forever. After Frye leaves a wad of gum on CLIO’s very expensive and ridiculous water fixture, he tells Adriana to pack up. They are going to print with the story, with or without Cerisola’s statement. As they leave, Cerisola instructs one of his goons to get all the info he can on Adriana. Frye is already on their radar.

Marco heads into the precinct where he is regarded with suspicion, as always. Marco senses that something is up, and his gut feeling is confirmed when Robles pulls him aside and tells him to investigate an “accident” that Pintado has been involved in. He immediately calls Sonya and asks her to meet up.

When Marco and Sonya arrive on the scene, they find a staged accident. Pintado is dead and impaled on a piece of rebar, with visible cigarette burns all over his face and neck. Sonya can instantly see that he’s been tortured. They also realize that now the Juarez cops have Eva’s statement. One of the cops that tried to kidnap Pintado the night that Sonya stopped them, is on the scene. She and Marco rush off to try and protect Eva.

At Frye’s apartment, he and Adriana finish writing up their story about Quintana, the hitman, Cerisola and Galvan. Adriana is hesitant since Franco never named names. Frye wants to run with it, but Adriana fears the repercussions. He offers to take Adriana’s name off of the story if she’s worried about being harmed, but she refuses. She hits send and they make a toast to their future Pulitzer.

Sonya and Marco show up at Rev Bob’s to let Eva know about Pintado and the fact that she is officially in danger now. Sonya tells her that they want to put some police cruisers near the farm, but a scared and furious Eva refuses their help.

As Marco and Sonya head back to the station, Marco suggests that Pintado likely saved a copy of Eva’s affidavit. They decide to check out the second to last hotel Pintado stayed at.

Eva, with ax in hand, marches toward the barn. She confronts the dirty cop who taunts her, calling her a whore and laughing about the ways they abused her. She swings the flat part of the ax and smashes his head. When her calls her a whore again, she nearly chops his head right off. Linder walks in as she lands blow after blow, but says nothing.

Adriana and Frye arrive at the newsroom to find that their story has be removed from publication by their editor for lack of legit sources. Frye is furious so he screams at his boss in front of the whole newsroom. When the editor questions Frye’s sobriety, Frye looks nervous. The editor hand Frye a cup, because the month prior Frye signed a contract allowing for random drug testing. Frye whips it out and pisses right there in front of everyone. When the editor fires him on the spot, Frye pours out the contents all over his desk and walks out.

Cerisola shows up to chat with Galvan about the recent murder of Pintado. In short, he’s not happy about it. He wants Galvan to keep Robles in check. Also, the slaughtered teenagers with Galvan’s calling card? Probably not the best move. Cerisola hands Galvan a gift; a book all about Lord Palmerston, an old timey drug lord. Cerisola suggests that Galvan takes some pointers from the more genteel manner of Palmerston. Cerisola also reminds Galvan that the government pushed the DEA out of Juarez in exchange for a reduction in the rampant violence. Galvan isn’t exactly holding up his end of the bargain. Eleanor has yet to fix the issues she caused in Texas and now Sonya is onto them. This is news to Galvan, who walks away to deal with it.

At Pintado’s hotel, Marco and Sonya discover that Pintado never check out of his hotel and the copy of Eva’s affidavit could be there. At the same time, Juarez cops show up to look for the same info. As the cops try to break down the door, Sonya finds a copy hidden in a package. Marco shoots one of the cops in the leg, but the other cop, the one who keeps threatening Sonya, pulls a gun on Marco. Sonya warns him to freeze, but the cop doesn’t and Sonya shoots him in the chest. Marco orders her to go back out to the car while he takes care of everything. As she leaves, she hears two gunshots from behind the closed door.

Under cover of night, Eva and Linder bury the dirty cops body. Afterwards they hop on Linder’s bike and drive off into the dark desert.

As Marco and Sonya drive away from the scene, panic sets in. Sonya isn’t even allowed to carry a firearm in Mexico and now she’s gone and shot a man. Marco tells her that he’ll take care of it, and that it’s his problem now. “You were never here, you understand,” he tells her.
