Morning Brew – Sally Ride gets a Navy ship in her name

Good morning!

First, another sad loss: The legendary and lovely Lauren Bacall. She played a lesbian in the film adaptation of out author Dorothy Baker‘s Young Man With a Horn, though it was 1950 when it came out so it was, as one film historian noted, “thinly veiled.” May she rest in peace.

Out director Stewart Thorndike talked with IndieWire about her queer horror series Lyle.

Marlene King is the only out lesbian on Variety’s list of TV showrunners. So many white guys!

Latina has a list of Latino Celebrities Who Are LGBT Allies & Supporters.

Congrats to Melissa Ferrick for her win in the The Independent Music Award’ 13 Vox Pop poll. The out musician won Best Alt. Country Album for The Truth Is.

Star Trek author David Mack says he received a complain about a lesbian sex scene and he wrote a perfect response on his LiveJournal.

If [the fan] thinks the fear of alienating a few closed-minded readers is going to stop me from writing stories that feature and promote characters of diverse backgrounds—including LGBTQ characters, persons of color, and people who belong to ideological or philosophical minorities—he must be out of his mind. I’m a fucking Star Trek writer. Hasn’t he ever heard of IDIC—“Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations”?

Brandi Carlile is going on a small acoustic tour and it’s already selling out in pre-sales. Get a ticket if you can!

The Navy has named a ship after the late and great Sally Ride. Sally’s partner Dr. Tam O’Shaughnessy christened the ship this week. Amazing.

BrainPickings (one of my favorite sites) has a great piece on The Invisibles, a book and film series that focuses on gay and lesbian couples from times in history they were not allowed to be out. We were still here!
