Morning Brew – Iggy Azalea on not being a “fake lesbian”

Good morning! Kristen Merlin survived her first week on The Voice live shows. She tweeted this happy photo with her mentor Shakira. Ellen Page will rename your dog. Iggy Azalea’s album The New Classic dropped yesterday and it’s really, really good. She talked with two gay publications about how much she loves her LGBT fans and the community, in general. Some choice quotes:

[Homophobia] comes from ignorance and homophobes not being around enough gay people. I think straight men, especially in hip-hop, have this notion that a gay man is going to come and make them gay or try to have sex with them, and I always think that’s so weird. I just want to tell them, ‘Hey, they aren’t interested in you. You’re not that cute.’ I don’t get why some straight men are still so scared of gay people. But I honestly believe it’s like anything else. People just need to be exposed to it long enough for it to not be scary anymore. That’s the case with a lot of rappers. They haven’t been around very many different people, and a lot of them aren’t very well traveled. It’s just a lack of culture.
I think [people assume I’m gay] because I will do songs and I’ll talk about women, and also, there was such a big trend of people being fake bisexuals. I don’t know what that was about. Like, “I’m such a bisexual woman,” and I’d be like, “But you had boyfriends your whole life; you’re not gay. Why are you pretending to be? What’s with that?” I know I talk about women a lot, and I think women are beautiful and I like talking about them, but I didn’t want people to misconstrue that and think that I was being a fake lesbian. It wasn’t a, “Don’t think I’m gay,” but more so me being like, “Hey, I’m not a fake lesbian.” Straight’s cool too, you know! It’s almost like gay nowadays is so trendy that people want to be gay and then they don’t. I’m not gay. I love gay people, but I’m straight. I don’t wanna kiss girls. I’m not into girls. I appreciate women, and I like rapping about them, but in case you thought I was a lame person pretending to be gay, um, I’m not.

She was so good at The Dinah. A married lesbian threesome is having a baby. Truth is often stranger than fiction. Another Sapphic subplot is happening on EastEnders. It appears Sonia Fowler will be “making a move on Tina Carter.” Sonia is otherwise straight and married, while Tina is openly gay. Natalie Cassidy plays Sonia and says of the new storyline:

“Sonia’s had a relationship with a woman before. But it’s not about lesbianism or Sonia being gay, and there is actually a scene where she tells Bianca that she doesn’t want to put a label on who she is. Sonia’s quite modern in that sense, so in layman’s terms we can call her bisexual!”

Bollywood star Monica Dogra will play a lesbian in a new short film alongside out model Casey Legler. The short, called Relapse, follows “Two women whose marriage crumbles when Casey’s character decides to undergo a sex change operation to become a man.” Monica spoke highly of working with (and kissing) Casey. I’m just over here completely not jealous. Monica is also a gorgeous model, BTW. Looking for more Laura Prepon? She spoke with The Daily Beast about why she she didn’t sign on for more of Orange is the New Black‘s second season.

Basically, I wasn’t a series regular and wasn’t under contract, and then had a scheduling conflict that came up during Season 2. But I love the show and I love my character, and I told Jenji from the get-go, “I want to be in as many as I can.” So we did, and I’ll be in four episodes for Season 2. And then if we get a Season 3, I’ll be in every episode. I totally missed the show. It sucks, but there’s only one of me, and there’s only so much time in the day. We did what we could, and if there’s a Season 3, I worked it out so that wouldn’t be an issue anymore.

Want to read something really dumb? “Four Signs You Are Dating A Lesbian,” because “more than a woman, it is her boyfriend who would know if he is dating a lesbian girlfriend.” Did you know you can watch the Season 2 premiere episode of Orphan Black on the BBC America website right now? Here’s a little look at what you can expect next week.

Judy Gold will be answering parenting questions for People. This should be great! Bitch covers queer comics, as in the drawn-on-paper type. How did that brilliant SNL sketch Dyke & Fats come to be? Kate McKinnon explains:

“We were both really tired one night. and I just said to Aidy, ‘Man, dyke is tired,’ and Aidy said, ‘Fats is tired, too.’ And then it became our beautiful thing that we had together and we wanted to make something out of it. It’s something we wanted to do for a long time.”

The rest is sweet history. Jo Becker’s Forcing the Spring is about the fight for marriage equality, but Slate says it’s not all that accurate. Paula Pell’s film The Nest, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as sisters, will hit theaters on December 15, 2015. Amber Heard is going “goth chic” on the set of her new film, When I Live My Life Over Again. Wanda Sykes will be hosting TrevorLive this year. The event goes down in New York on June 16. There’s been an update on the murder of the lesbian couple in Texas. Their car has been found with blood evidence, which should be helpful in the continuing investigation. In case you want to watch Sue Sylvester make her New York debut from last night’s Glee, Perez Hilton has her duet with Mr. Schue. Do you ever get tired of Idina Menzel singing “Take Me or Leave Me?” Me neither. A couple of worthy projects to check out: GayFace 1st Class and The Sundance Institute. Queer photography and film! The creator/star of Girl/Girl Scene, Tucky Williams has a new project coming out at the end of this month.
