Shailene Woodley‘s star is rising, but she’s been working since she was a preteen. The star of Divergent has moved on from small parts in The O.C. to leading The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and now she’s a bonafied movie actress, working alongside Kate Winslet and Ashley Judd.
But what’s become apparent about Shailene, the person, as she’s interviewed more and more and landing magazine covers, is that she is a different kind of Hollywood starlet. From her saying that her religion is “the earth,” to her showing up to events wearing what makes her feel most comfortable (she says she prefers to wear less make-up), Shailene isn’t afraid to be a little different. And now she’s telling The Hollywood Reporter that extends to her personal relationships, and that she is not definitively straight.
“I fall in love with human beings based on who they are,” she tells the magazine, “not based on what they do or what sex they are.”
Although she didn’t use any labels of “bisexual” or “queer,” it’s still great that Shailene, only 22, is unafraid to be discuss her feelings on love and romantic feelings that challenge the status quo. The rest of the interview has her speaking frankly about other subjects like filming sex scenes so that they are authentic and not just for show.
With Divergent opening at the end of this month and a headline in the Reporter asking if she’s “the next Jennifer Lawrence,” Shailene is poised to become a household name by the time she’s 23. And outside of her obvious talent, the fact that she’s open about her idea of sexual attraction makes her one actress we’ll be rooting for. She’s not interested in limitations; she’s interested in truth.
