The 11 most swoon-worthy TV moments of 2013

There sure were a lot of lady-on-lady happenings on the teevee that made us sigh sweetly in 2013. I mean, obviously the top lesbian sex scenes did a little something for us, but we’ve already counted those down. So in the spirit of celebrating the non-sex moments that made our hearts sing, here are 11 times we practically swooned right out of our seats. 11. Jules Gives Val a Promise Ring (Betrayal)

Betrayal kind of blew our minds this year by adding Sofia Black D’Elia to the cast and introducing a very sweet, very real lesbian love story between between Jules and Val. While the madness of the adults spins out of control on the show, Val and Jules just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. In fact, Jules recently gave Val her ring and promised not to lie or cheat on her, despite being a full Shane McCutcheon in her past. 10. Jane Protects Maura from Angry Prisoners (Rizzoli & Isles)

After Maura was tossed in the slammer-jammer on Rizzoli & Isles, Jane stopped by to check on her and promise to get her out as soon as possible, but when she saw that Maura’s perfect face had been punched by another prisoner, Jane butched up like never before and basically threatened to burn the whole jail to the ground if anyone touched her girlfriend ever again. 9. Mona Vanderwaal is Mona Vanderwaal (Pretty Little Liars)

Oh, you know, just another year of general Vandershenanigans on Pretty Little Liars: Mona admitting she wore a Phantom of the Opera mask over an Alison DiLaurentis mask over a paper mache mask she made herself during craft time at the asylum in the off chance she’d get a kiss from Hanna, Mona stealing Emily’s car to go on a coffee run for her best girls, Mona turning herself in for a crime she didn’t commit to keep her True Love’s mom out of jail. The only thing missing this year was a hit-and-run and some glamping. 8. Piper and Alex Spoon (Orange is the New Black)

I, for one, made a strangled whimpering noise right out loud when Piper finally gave into her feelings for Alex on Orange Is the New Black, flipping their spooning position to whisper, “Why do you feel so inevitable to me?” It was almost too real for comfort.

7. Callie and Arizona Can’t Help Themselves (Grey’s Anatomy)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Grey’s Anatomy. We get it. Callie cut off Arizona’s leg, Arizona cheated with Dr. Peyton Tree Hill. Shit happens in every marriage, you know. But despite their anger and sadness and the million blame-games between them, when Callie and Arizona give into each other, they frikkin’ give in to each other. For a couple whose lack of sex was the main plot of season ten, they sure did do it real good during the season 11 midseason finale. 6. Mulan Loves Aurora (She Really Loves Aurora!) (Once Upon a Time)

There is nothing quite like shipping a subtext couple only to finally have your feelings validated by a show’s writers. On Once Upon a Time, When Mulan’s face finally confessed that she is head over heels in love with another Disney princess, I was torn between melting into a puddle of swoon goop or fist-pumping and hollering, “I knew it!” (Because you guys told me it was going to happen! And I believed you!) 5. Delphine Knows Cosima’s Clone Number (Orphan Black)

There shouldn’t be anything romantic about the woman who spied her way into your heart (and bed) telling you she knows your clone tag number, but I’ll be damned if Delphine saying “324b21” didn’t feel like some sci-fi wedding vows. It probably helps when the spy in question looks and sounds like Evelyne Brochu. Four for you, Orphan Black. 4. Santana and Brittany Walk Off Stage Together in Silence (Glee)

When Heather Morris decided to leave Glee because of her real-life pregnancy, the writers finally did the best thing they’ve ever done for our beloved Brittana: They shut the heck up. Some emotions are too powerful for words and some relationships transcend the chatter. After the curtain closed, Santana and Brittany were the last ones standing, together, hand-in-hand.

3. Lauren Lewis Zoie Palmers Barefoot Across a Field (Lost Girl)

‘Nuff said. 2. Paige and Emily Plan Their U-Haul Life (Pretty Little Liars)

For one shining moment in Rosewood, PA, Emily Fields looked at the grinning face of the girl with whom she’d been through hell (and in inadvertent roofie loop) and said yes to a future, together, far away from the murders and the masks and poisoned sports creams and car-jacking dolls and zombie ex-girlfriends and the the GLASS IN HER HAIR. Yes, she loved Paige. Yes, she would follow Paige to Stanford. Yes to moving the beds closer! To puffy drapes! To staying alive! (Also yes to Shay Mitchell‘s shoulders in this scene.) 1. Lena Throws Her Book for Stef (The Fosters)

On The Fosters Stef was a real pain in the butt about her wedding, but after working out that her dad’s disapproval was causing her to internalize a lot of shame, she confronted him, uninvited him to her wedding, and went home to beg Lena’s forgiveness. Four words into Stef’s apology, Lena threw the book she was reading across the room and pulled Stef into bed with her. (Runner-up: “You had me at lesbian.”)
