Good Morning America anchor and award-winning broadcast journalist Robin Roberts today acknowledged her “long time girlfriend” Amber Laign on Facebook. In the post, Roberts writes, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”
People magazine describes Laign as “a licensed massage therapist with a private practice specializing in patients recovering from injuries” and reports that the two have been together for ten years “after meeting through mutual friends.”
Roberts has gone through some very personal things in the public arena. She is a breast cancer survivor and is also living with myelodysplastic syndrome, both of which she allowed viewers to follow along with her as she beat the diagnoses and underwent radiation, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. A success story two times over, Robin has never been married or been known to have a male partner, which is why it’s always been suspected that Robin might identify as something other than straight.
In a recent thank you speech, Robin recalled a time when she was honored at the ESPYS in 2013, and mentioned that all the most important people in her life were there with her, including “my girlfriend.”
In her career she’s been inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPYs, as well as three Daytime Emmys. A well-respected and oft-celebrated personality, Robin was one of Barbara Walters’ “Most Fascinating People of the Year” in 2013.
